A Wide Array of Graduate Programs in Psychology

Adelphi University offers three Master of Arts (M.A.) degree programs in Psychology: the M.A. in General Psychology, the M.A. in School Psychology, and the M.A. in Mental Health Counseling. In addition, graduate students can pursue a Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology or respecialization diplomas. Each program develops students to be successful scholars and professionals who are prepared to address the current and future needs of society.

Respecialization Diploma Program

The University also offers a Respecialization in Clinical Psychology program to doctoral level psychologists who are interested in making career shifts into clinical psychology. Students in both programs are required to complete clinical theory courses, extensive supervised clinical practice and educational colloquia.

Community Partnerships, Psychological Services and Clinical Facilities

Through the Center for Psychological Services, students have unique opportunities to participate in extensive clinical training at clinics on campus and within a variety of mental health organizations in the area.

Training opportunities are available at Beth Israel Hospital and Medical Center, Mount Sinai Medical Center, Creedmoor State Psychiatric Hospital, and Presbyterian Hospital of Columbia and Cornell Universities. Adelphi University also manages the Postgraduate Psychotherapy Center, which has provided affordable and effective psychotherapy services to children, adolescents, and adults in the community since 1963. The Social Training Center is the Institute's latest initiative, and offers therapeutic and support services to high school and college-aged individuals on the autism spectrum.

Supported by Dedicated and Decorated Faculty Members

Faculty members of the Derner Institute include dedicated instructors and honored professionals with continued interests in research and community development. For instance, Professor Robert Bornstein, Ph.D., is dedicated to integrating classroom learning with collaboration and mentorship. Dr. Bornstein has been the principal investigator on two National Science Foundation (NSF) grants and two National Institute of Health (NIH) grants, and is a contributing author to 14 books.

Karen Lombardi, Ph.D., has presented at 30 professional conferences and has been presented with Adelphi University's Merit Award for Teaching. Jean Lau Chin, Ed.D., has held positions on a number of professional boards and community associations, including the American Psychological Association, the Society for the Psychology of Women and the National Register for Health Service Providers in Psychology.
