Education Built for Life

Many people want to advance their careers – or start new ones – but work, family, and other responsibilities mean life is just too busy to get a degree. There’s an education built for them – an education built for life.

Upper Iowa University, a private, nonprofit university founded in 1857, is a recognized leader in online and self-paced programs. The same nationally acclaimed education one gets from top-notch faculty at the main campus in Fayette, Iowa, or through their 25 U.S. education centers is also available to students from the comfort of their own home, office, or anywhere with an internet connection. UIU students have more than 40 undergraduate and graduate majors to choose from, and all utilize a unique, flexible course schedule. Each academic year consists of five 8-week sessions and one accelerated 6-week summer session, so UIU students typically take less classes at a time. Students can even transfer up to 90 credits from another institution toward a UIU degree.

With a highly supportive and caring faculty and staff, the UIU experience helps students become confident in their abilities and inspires them to reach their full potential. This kind of hands-on learning is a key reason why 92 percent of graduates are employed or continuing their education shortly after commencement.

Learn why U.S. News & World Report, Military Times, and others recognize Upper Iowa University as a top choice among colleges and universities. Whether one just graduated high school, is looking to enhance their current career, or is seeking to start a new career, a UIU education is an investment in everyone's future and an Education Built for Life.

Why UIU?

- INNOVATIVE: Five 8-week sessions and an accelerated, 6-week summer session.

- MANAGEABLE: Students generally take just 1-2 courses at a time.

- CONVENIENT: Evening classes or online courses to fit one's busy schedule.

- FINISH FASTER: Transfer up to 90 college credits from other colleges.

- HELPFUL/CARING: Personal advisors tailor one's academic plan and advise students on financial aid.

- AWARD WINNING: Multiple-year recipient of Governor's Volunteer Award for achievements in student leadership and community service. Repeatedly recognized by U.S. News & World Report, Military Times, CollegeChoice.net, and others.

- SUCCESSFUL: 92% of graduates are employed or in a graduate program soon after graduation.*

Nationally Recognized Online Education

The university is a long-time innovator in online and self-paced learning options. U.S. News & World Report recognized these achievements each of the last five years by naming UIU one of its top universities for online undergraduate programs. Students can attend from anywhere with access to the internet and coursework is designed so students can choose the times each week they wish to attend to their studies. This convenience means students do not need to pick between work, family, and other responsibilities and their education, making UIU programs particularly popular among working adults and military personnel. Many students who live near one of UIU's 25 U.S. locations combine face-to-face classes with online courses in their schedules to create a schedule that provides maximum flexibility.

UIU Self-Paced Degree Program

Since 1973, Upper Iowa University has offered a range of certificates and associate and bachelor's to students around the world through the self-paced program. One of the first of its kind in the nation, the program is modeled after a traditional correspondence learning program, with students and instructors interacting on a one-to-one basis. Students can work at their own pace and take up to six months to complete each course. More than 100 courses are available, and classes are offered in paper and web-based formats.

Online Degrees/Certificate Programs

The UIU online program offers complete programs at the associate, bachelor, and master levels.

Criminal justice and psychology are the newest associate degrees offered online. Associate degrees are also available in general business and liberal arts.

Bachelor of Arts degrees can be earned in graphic design, liberal arts, and sociology. Meanwhile, the University offers online Bachelor of Science degrees in accounting, business administration, communication, criminal justice, emergency and disaster management, financial management, health services administration, human resources management, human services, information systems, information technology, management, marketing, psychology, public administration, RN to BSN nursing, social science, and software engineering.

UIU's graduate programs are completely online and also offered in-person at some of its locations. Current master's degrees include Master of Business Administration, with emphases in accounting, corporate financial management, general management, human resources management and organizational development; Master of Education, with emphases in higher education, early childhood, ESL, instructional strategist, reading and teacher leadership; Master of Public Administration, with emphases in emergency management and homeland security, health and human services, public management, non-profit organizational management, government administration, and general study; and Master of Sport Administration, with a pair of emphases in sport management, and coaching and leadership education.

In addition, students can choose from undergraduate certificates, graduate certificates, and post-graduate certificates. Each certificate allows students to complete a group of interrelated courses to gain experience in a specific area. Since certificate programs are drawn directly from regular UIU courses, students can choose to complete a certificate program while working toward their degrees. Undergraduate certificates include art administration, communication studies, emergency and disaster management, forensics/criminalistics, human resources management, management, marketing, organizational leadership, psychology, sales, and sustainability. Graduate certificates are available in both the Master of Education and Master of Sport Administration programs. Post-graduate certificates are available through the School of Business for those who hold graduate degrees.
