Distance Learning for Undergraduate Students
Upper Iowa University (UIU) offers students
global access to online programs and self-paced study opportunities. Students can
complete bachelor's degrees through one of the university's 25 U.S. locations without residency requirements. The
asynchronous nature of the online courses also allows students to participate
in class activities on their own schedule. The flexibility and convenience of
these programs makes them popular among students, such as military personnel,
who are unable to participate in traditional college classes. Many students
combine face-to-face classes with online courses to earn their degrees; and
some majors, like the bachelor of science in nursing, are offered in this hybrid
UIU is nationally recognized for its achievements in distance education. For the past three years, the Upper Iowa University online bachelor’s degrees have been ranked among the best by U.S. News & World Report.
30 Bachelor's Degrees Available
The UIU online program offers 30 majors to undergraduates, in addition to eight undergraduate certificate programs and four post-graduate certificate programs. UIU's simple and convenient transfer policy also allows students the opportunity to transfer up to 90 credit hours when entering their bachelor's program from another four-year college. These programs are taught by faculty members who are successful and knowledgeable experts in their given fields. In addition, UIU offers four associate degrees in criminal justice, general business, liberal arts and psychology. Every eight weeks, students enroll for two full-credit courses. There are six, eight-week terms each year including two summer terms.
UIU Self-Study Program
Since 1973, Upper Iowa University has offered a range of certificates and associate and bachelor’s to students around the world through the self-study program. One of the first of its kind in the nation, the program is modeled after a traditional correspondence learning program but offers students more flexibility than traditional coursework. The program offers students access to more than 100 courses that can be completed as quickly as other UIU courses, or students can work at their own pace and take up to six months to complete each course. Courses are now also available in a web-based format.
Professional Certificate Programs
Upper Iowa University offers undergraduate
students the opportunity to complete eight professional certificates: art
administration, communication studies, emergency and disaster management, human
resources management, management, marketing, organizational leadership and
psychology. Each certificate allows students to complete a group of
interrelated courses to gain experience in a specific area. Since certificate
programs are drawn directly from regular UIU courses, many students choose to
complete a certificate program while working toward their degrees.
Certificates may be earned through any UIU learning experience. They may be completed for credit or for non-academic credit.
Financial Aid Opportunities
Upper Iowa University works with students
to try to keep their post-graduation debt as low as possible. There are a
growing number of UIU scholarships awarded annually to students studying at UIU
education centers or through the online program. Each of the four UIU academic
schools and many of the academic programs also have scholarships available that
are awarded annually.
Iowa residents may also be eligible for Iowa Tuition Grants, which provide the difference between UIU tuition and the average tuition at the three state universities. Qualifying students in UIU's distance education program may also be eligible to receive veterans' benefits.
