These awards are open women graduates of any U.S. institution, and are open to applicants of any nationality. Awards are usually made to applicants currently enrolled in or applying to graduate school for the following academic year. Preference will be given to applicants who have not held one of these awards previously. Applicants who have previously been awarded a Wellesley College Graduate Fellowship of $5,000 or more are not eligible for additional funding. Decisions will be based on merit and need. U.S. tax laws apply. Awards are for study at institutions other than Wellesley College and are open to applicants of any nationality. Mary McEwen Schimke Scholarship, a supplemental award to provide relief from household and child care expenses while pursuing graduate study. The award is made on the basis of scholarly expectation and identified need. The candidate must be over 30 years of age, currently engaged in graduate study in literature and/or history. Preference given to American studies majors. 3 Letters of Reference: The committee asks for comment on your past work, future promise, and character. If you are in the second or later year of a graduate or professional degree program, ideally at least two of these letters will be from graduate instructors in your major field. We encourage you to obtain letters specifically addressing your plans for graduate study.
