Acoustical Society of America Raymond H. Stetson Scholarship in Phonetics and Speech

Description

The Raymond H. Stetson Scholarship, which was established through a grant to the Acoustical Society Foundation in 1998. It honors the memory of Professor Raymond H. Stetson, a pioneer investigator in phonetics and speech science. The purpose of the scholarship is to facilitate the research efforts of promising graduate students. An applicant shall be a member of the Acoustical Society of America at the application deadline for the Stetson Scholarship. Evidence of good academic standing in a graduate degree program during the entire scholarship term is also required. Financial need is not a consideration. The award for each scholarship consists of a $30,000 stipend plus up to $3,000 in travel expenses for one academic year to attend meetings of the Acoustical Society of America. Research areas to be supported, in preferential order, are: Motor coordination of speech organs, Kinematics of speech articulation, Aerodynamics of speech production, Combined acoustic/kinematic modeling of speech production, Linguistic issues related to speech production, Articulatory phonology, experimental phonology, Neural function for speech communication, Infant/child development for speech communication. Applications will be evaluated by a subcommittee of the ASA Technical Committee on Speech Communication. Criteria for selection will include the applicantÔÇÖs academic record, a personal statement of no more than three single-spaced pages, two letters of recommendation, a copy of a research paper, and the relevance of the research area as stipulated by the gift which established this Scholarship. The subcommittee will be the sole judge of relative merit of work in the several research areas that are to be supported. The completed application form, copies of transcripts of university graduate study, a personal statement, a current curriculum vitae, a research paper, and two letters of recommendation should be sent to the address indicated below. Applications and letters sent by e-mail attachment (to asa@acousticalsociety.org) must be submitted not later than 5 April 2021. Letters should be written on letterhead paper and include the signatures of the sponsors. The successful applicant will be notified on or about 28 June 2021.
