- The ASWB exam measures the minimum competency acceptable for social work within a given scope of practice.
- The ASWB offers four examination levels—bachelor’s, master’s, advanced generalist, and clinical. The ASWB bachelor’s exam is designed for entry-level social workers with a BSW degree. The ASWB master’s exam is designed for entry-level social workers with an MSW degree with less than 2 years of practice experience. The advanced generalist and clinical exams are designed for entry-level social workers with an MSW degree and at least 2 years of post-degree experience.

- For the Associate/Bachelors level: human development, diversity, and behavior in the environment; assessment; interventions with clients/client systems; and professional relationships, values, and ethics
- For Masters level: human development, diversity, and behavior in the environment; assessment and intervention planning; interventions with clients/client systems; and professional relationships, values, and ethics
- For Advanced Generalist level: human development, diversity, and behavior in the environment; intervention processes and techniques for use across systems; intervention processes and techniques for use with larger systems; and professional relationships, values, and ethics
- For Clinical Social Worker level: human development, diversity, and behavior in the environment; assessment, diagnosis, and treatment planning; psychotherapy, clinical interventions, and case management; and professional values and ethics.
- To become an LMSW, you will need to earn an MSW degree. To get your licensure, you must also take the ASWB master’s exam or advanced generalist exam. Some states may also require hours of supervised experience after completing your degree to become licensed.
- To become an LCSW, candidates must earn an MSW degree, complete additional coursework and supervised clinical experience, and pass the ASWB clinical exam. State requirements vary, so check your state to determine which exams you must pass to earn your license.
- The licensing exams are pass/fail exams with a certain number of questions that must be answered correctly (a pass point) to pass. The ASWB passing score varies depending on the candidate’s category and exam version (or form). In general, the ASWB passing score ranges from 90 to 107 correct of the 150 scored questions; however, the pass point is determined by the jurisdiction in which the test is administered.
- You will need ample time to study for the ASWB exam. It is recommended to study at least 8 weeks before your test, but 3 months will ensure that you have enough time. Try to study daily to remember and memorize what you are studying.
