I started preparing for the test 3 months ago and took it a week ago. I passed it! If I hadn't used you guys, I probably would not have passed the OAR and gotten a qualifying score.

DO YOU HAVE ANY QUESTIONS?

Top ATF FAQs

  • The ATF exam is the first step to becoming an ATF Special Agent in a multi-step process. The test is designed to assess a candidate’s qualifications and aptitude for the role of an ATF special agent. The ATF test will measure a candidate’s:
    • Reason—testing problem-solving skills and analytical thinking
    • Law enforcement knowledge—understanding and articulating procedures and laws
    • Ability to communicate through writing—articulating ideas clearly and effectively
The format of the exam consists of multiple-choice questions and can include:
    • Criminal Investigation Techniques
    • Legal Knowledge
    • Situational Judgment
An assessment test and ATF pre-employment physical task test follow the ATF exam as part of the hiring process.
  • Those seeking to become a special agent for the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives (ATF) should take the ATF exam. Responsibilities of the ATF agents can include:
    • Violation investigation—investigating federal crimes involving explosives, arson, the diversion of alcohol and tobacco, and illegal firearms trafficking.
    • Cooperation—working with federal, state, and local law enforcement agencies to confront criminal issues and strategize to solve incidents.
    • Planning investigations—gathering evidence, interviewing witnesses, and performing undercover operations to build cases against suspects.
    • Enforcing Laws—upholding federal regulations and working to dismantle criminal activities that are a threat to public safety.
Highly trained special agents are responsible for the above tasks as well as responsibilities that may be assigned at the time.
  • The ATF exam takes 2.5 hours and is made up of three parts:
    1. Verbal reasoning—assessing a candidate’s ability to comprehend, analyze, and critically evaluate text in a paragraph based on interpretation and understanding. Questions may include determining whether something is fact vs. opinion, inference of text, and pinpointing the aspects of a paragraph like details or main idea.
    2. Quantitative reasoning—evaluating the tester’s knowledge in interpreting quantitative data and solving numerical problems. Questions may include analysis of charts, graphs, and tables; solving equations and inequalities; basic arithmetic; and word problems.
Investigative reasoning—determining the candidate’s strength in analyzing information, drawing connections between details, and making logical conclusions. Questions may include deductive reasoning and case analysis.
  • After passing the ATF Special Agent exam and completing all hiring requirements, the successful applicant will seek employment at the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives. Various locations are assigned based on the needs of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives. ATF special agents will operate out of field offices across the United States of America. New Special Agents are typically assigned to a field office where they will complete their probationary period and begin their law enforcement careers. After the initial assignment, there may be opportunities to relocate to different locations. Field divisions include:
    • Atlanta
    • Boston

  • Yes, passing a polygraph exam is a requirement for employment to ensure that candidates are suitable for law enforcement roles by demonstrating honesty, reliability, and integrity. Questions throughout the polygraph may include an inquiry into criminal history, substance use, and other personal behaviors. Preparing for this aspect of becoming an ATF Special Agent requires honesty, staying calm, and an understanding of potential questions. In the test, sensors are attached to measure heart rate, blood pressure, and respiration. The examiner will monitor physiological responses while asking questions. Since ATF Special Agents’ actions impact individuals and communities while handling sensitive information, a polygraph test is one step to understanding whether a candidate is trustworthy and fit to be an ATF Special Agent.
