AT-SA FAQs
- The Air Traffic Skills Assessment, also known as the ATSA exam (or AT-SA exam), is one of several Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) tests. This particular test assesses your ability to perform the required tasks of an air traffic controller.
- The Air Traffic Skills Assessment test includes seven subtests. It features test items such as reading comprehension passages, spatial relationship word problems, and psychometric tests designed to assess your mental and psychological capacity to work as a certified air traffic controller.
- Not just anyone can take the Air Traffic Controller Skills Assessment test. The FAA must formally invite candidates to be eligible for the assessment. Prospective candidates can request a test invitation by responding to a job announcement on the USA Jobs website. Additional eligibility requirements include fluency in English and United States citizenship.
- The FAA will make recommendations for your candidacy as an air traffic controller based on your performance on the ATSA exam. The four possible recommendations include Best Qualified, Well Qualified, Qualified, or Not Referred. All recommendations except “Not Referred” indicate a passing Air Traffic Skills Assessment test score. However, jobs in this occupational field are highly competitive, so you’ll want to score as high as possible.
- The Air Traffic Skills Assessment takes approximately 2 hours and 50 minutes to complete, and up to 30 minutes of additional time is allotted for breaks. Each section has its own time limit. For example, the word problems portion of the test should be completed in just 20 minutes.
- The FAA covers the cost of the ATSA exam, so applicants are not charged; however, they are responsible for the cost of parking and travel.
- Peterson’s offers three full-length ATSA practice tests for subscribers to help prepare you for the questions you can expect on the exam.
- Peterson’s ATSA test prep provides all the resources you need, including an ATSA study guide with tips for preparing for the exam, three practice tests, two collision avoidance examples, and three personality test examples to help elevate your ATSA exam prep. While everyone is different, Peterson’s recommends at least 6 weeks of preparation.
