NPTE FAQs

  • The National Physical Therapy Exam (NPTE) is a multiple-choice exam that measures and assesses your basic entry-level competence after graduation from an accredited program or from an equivalent non-accredited program. The NPTE exam is administered to candidates applying for their state board license.
  • Physical Therapists and Physical Therapy Assistants need to take and pass the NPTE to apply for their state board license.
  • The NPTE consists of 250 multiple-choice questions for aspiring physical therapists and 200 multiple-choice questions for physical therapy assistants.
  • The NPTE Physical Therapy Assistant Exam is used to ensure that physical therapist assistants can apply clinical practices that are high quality, safe, and effective for patients.
  • The NPTE Physical Therapy Assistant Exam consists of 2 categories: body system and non-system. The items addressed in the body system category include cardiovascular and pulmonary, musculoskeletal, integumentary, neuromuscular and nervous, gastrointestinal, metabolic and endocrine, genitourinary, lymphatic, and system interactions. The items addressed in the non-system include: equipment; devices and technologies; safety and protection; professional responsibilities; therapeutic modalities; and research and evidence-based practice. An NPTE study schedule is a great place to start when determining how to study for the NPTE Physical Therapy Assistant Exam—utilizing NPTE practice tests and investing in study materials to review the topics and content covered on the NPTE exam.
  • People seeking to become a physical therapy assistant or PTA typically need an Associate’s Degree from an accredited program and a certification and/or license. 36 states allow you to take the NPTE before graduation.
  • The minimum NPTE/PTA passing score is 600. Candidates can attempt the NPTE up to three times in a given year. If you fail after the third attempt, you must wait 12 months from your initial NPTE exam to take it again.
  • NPTE prep will be essential if you want an NPTE/PTA passing score. You’ll want to prep and study between 15-25 hours each week for at least 12 weeks before the NPTE exam. Regularly reviewing the topics covered on the NPTE Physical Therapy Assistant Exam will improve your memory and give you more confidence going into test day.
