  • The first section of the exam includes 200 questions covering the following topics:
    1. Scientific basis for dental hygiene practice
    2. Provision of clinical dental hygiene services
    3. Community health and research principles
    The second section of the exam includes 150 case-based items that refer to 12 to 15 dental hygiene patient cases. To correctly answer these questions, you need to have knowledge and skills in the following areas:
    1. Assessing patient characteristics
    2. Obtaining and interpreting radiographs
    3. Planning and managing dental hygiene care
    4. Performing periodontal procedures
    5. Using preventive agents
    6. Providing supportive treatment services
    7. Professional responsibility
  • Aspiring dental hygienists will need a degree or certificate from a dental hygiene school accredited by the Commission on Dental Accreditation (CODA). You must take and pass the National Board Dental Hygiene Examination (NBDHE), a regional or state clinical board examination, and obtain a state license. Most programs offer a 2-year associate degree, but some also offer a certificate, a bachelor’s degree, or a master’s degree.
  • Tests are scored by taking the number of correct answers and converting them into a standard score using the score-scale conversion formula. Examination results are reported in standard scores of 49 to 99. The minimum passing score is a standard score of 75.
