- The first section of the exam includes 200 questions covering the following topics:

- Performing periodontal procedures
- Using preventive agents
- Providing supportive treatment services
- Professional responsibility
- Aspiring dental hygienists will need a degree or certificate from a dental hygiene school accredited by the Commission on Dental Accreditation (CODA). You must take and pass the National Board Dental Hygiene Examination (NBDHE), a regional or state clinical board examination, and obtain a state license. Most programs offer a 2-year associate degree, but some also offer a certificate, a bachelor’s degree, or a master’s degree.
- Tests are scored by taking the number of correct answers and converting them into a standard score using the score-scale conversion formula. Examination results are reported in standard scores of 49 to 99. The minimum passing score is a standard score of 75.
