CDA FAQs
- The Dental Assistant National Board (DANB) Certified Dental Assistant (CDA) exam is the final step in the certification process for dental assistants.
- The CDA exam is broken up into three smaller tests:
- General Chairside Assisting: Patient Preparation and Documentation, Patient Management and Administrative Duties, Four-Handed Chairside Dentistry, Diagnostic/Laboratory Procedures and Dental Materials
- Radiation Health and Safety: Expose and Evaluate, Quality Assurance and Radiography Regulations, Radiation Safety for Patients and Operators, Infection Control
- Before taking this exam, prospective applicants must have the proper education and/or work experience and CPR/BLS certification from an approved provider. This exam cannot be taken unless an applicant can provide documentation related to education, work history, and CPR/BLS certification. Learn more about pathways to CDA.
- Here is a breakdown of questions for each test of the CDA:
- General Chairside Assisting (GC) Exam: 120 questions
- Radiation Health and Safety (RHS) Exam: 100 questions
- Here is a breakdown of questions for each test of the CDA:
- General Chairside Assisting (GC) Exam: 90 minutes
- Radiation Health and Safety (RHS) Exam: 75 minutes
- The CDA exams can be taken simultaneously (where you will answer 320 questions in 4 hours), in combinations, or individually. There is a slight cost discount if the tests are bundled.
- The DANB divides the CDA certification into three separate exams, all computer-adapted. This means the tests get harder or easier depending on how well you answer the questions. The overall score is determined by the number of questions answered correctly combined with question difficulty. Easier questions are worth less points and harder questions are worth more. The scoring range for each test (GC, RHS, and ICE) is from 100 to 900, with a minimum passing score of 400.
- The DANB does not invite candidates to schedule their exams until the application for certification has been approved. After the application is reviewed and approved, the DANB will send an approval notification to schedule the exams. Scheduling must be completed through the online portal and within a specified 60-day window.
- Peterson’s test prep offers two full-length online practice tests for each section of the CDA exam. Our test prep also gives you the resources you need, including a CDA study guide with tips for how to prepare for the CDA exam.
- Peterson’s full-length CDA practice tests are timed, simulating the actual CDA exam. Taking practice tests may help ease anxiety and bridge the gaps in course content.
