AP Psychology FAQs
- AP Psychology explores theories, ideas, and methods of systematic and scientific human behavior and mental processes. The AP Psychology exam will test your understanding of key concepts covered throughout your AP Psychology course. Some topics explored include biological bases of behavior, learning and cognition, developmental and social psychology, treatments of abnormal behaviors, motivation, sensation and perception, and individual differences.
- The AP Psychology exam has two sections: a multiple-choice section and a free-response section. The multiple-choice section consists of 100 questions, in which you’ll be asked to define and describe content from a variety of course topics covered in AP Psychology. You’ll also be required to apply skills of concept applications, data analysis, and scientific investigation. You’ll have 1 hour and 10 minutes to complete this section of the AP Psychology test. In the free-response section, you’ll be given 2 questions asking you to explain and apply theories using ideas from different theoretical frameworks and subdomains within the psychology field. You’ll also be asked to analyze psychological research studies by analyzing and interpreting quantitative data. You will have 50 minutes to complete these 2 questions.
- Although several topics are covered in AP Psychology, and most AP exams are designed to be more difficult, the content within AP Psychology is not that difficult if you study hard and know the material.
- An AP Psychology study guide can help you on test day. One of the best ways to prepare for the AP Psychology test is to utilize practice tests and review the course material covered in AP Psychology. There are other excellent methods on how to study for the AP Psychology exam. Some ideas include flashcards, instructional videos, taking notes during class, and frequently reviewing notes leading to exam day.
- An online practice exam is a great way to help you prepare for the AP Psychology test. Peterson’s test prep gives you access to three full-length AP Psychology practice tests and a diagnostic test to get you ready.

- If you are a traditional student and are taking or have taken AP Psychology, you can register for the AP Psychology exam through your school or another local participating school that offers AP classes. Your school will administer the test by collecting your fee of $94, ordering the test, and arranging a test-taking location and time. Talk to your teacher or contact the AP coordinator at your school. The College Board website explains fee reduction options if you have a significant financial need.
