- The AP Chemistry exam tests your knowledge of scientific concepts and ability to design and describe chemical experiments. There are four Big Ideas that you’ll learn throughout AP Chemistry: scale, proportion, and quantity; structure and properties of substances; transformations; and energy. By practicing scientific practices and skills, you will learn to think and act like a chemist. These skills include models and representations, question and method, representing data and phenomena, model analysis, mathematical routines, and argumentation. You will be expected to know and be able to demonstrate this on the exam.
- The AP Chemistry exam consists of two sections. In the first section, you’ll be asked 60 multiple-choice questions and have one hour and 30 minutes to complete them. In this section, you will receive a stimulus or set of data and a series of related questions. You will not be allowed to use a calculator during this section of the AP Chemistry exam. The second section consists of 7 free response questions, which you’ll have 1 hour and 45 minutes to complete. Three of those questions are long-answer questions, and 4 of the questions are short-answer questions. These 7 questions cover all 6 of the course skills. You can use four-function, scientific, and graphing calculators during this section.
- The AP Chemistry exam is often considered to be one of the hardest AP classes and exams offered. It requires a strong grasp of scientific concepts, in-depth knowledge of chemistry, and math skills.
- You will have 3 hours and 15 minutes to complete the AP Chemistry exam. The multiple-choice section consists of 60 questions and is 1 hour and 30 minutes long. The free-response question is 7 questions and 1 hour and 45 minutes long.
