DO YOU HAVE ANY QUESTIONS?

NCLEX-PN FAQs

  • The NCLEX PN exam determines your ability to practice nursing. NCLEX-PN stands for National Council Licensure Examination for Practical Nursing, which tests and measures your knowledge of essential skills and competence required to enter practical nursing safely. Candidates who qualify must take the exam within three years after nursing school graduation.
  • The NCLEX PN exam will test your knowledge of medical procedures and assessment to care for patients safely and best. On the exam, you’ll be given between 85 to 205 questions. These questions are computer-adaptive tests, meaning the computer determines your knowledge and competence based on how you answered previous questions. If you perform well throughout the exam, you’ll be asked fewer questions throughout the test. Questions on the exam will cover four key categories: Safe, Effective Care Environment, Health Promotion and Maintenance, Psychosocial Integrity, and Physiological Integrity. The Physiological Integrity category is the most significant portion of the NCLEX PN exam. This category covers adult medical and surgical care, pediatric care, gerontology, and infectious disease.
  • Aspiring nurses who have received an accredited Associate or Bachelor’s diploma in licensed practical nursing may take the mandated NCLEX PN exam to determine if it is safe to begin practicing entry-level practical nursing.
  • Since the NCLEX PN exam determines your ability to provide safe and effective patient care, it is designed to be quite challenging. However, many NCLEX-PN exam students pass with proper prep and study time.
  • An NCLEX PN study guide is one of the best ways to prepare you for the questions you’ll be asked on the exam. Peterson’s test prep gives you access to 3 complete practice tests, quizzes, flashcards, and interactive lessons to help you prepare and study for the NCLEX-PN exam.
  • The NCLEX PN exam will cover four categories of questions. Some examples of NCLEX PN practice questions are: Sample NCLEX-PN Question for Coordinated Care: The nurse in a long-term care facility is making client care assignments for unlicensed assistive personnel (UAP). Which of the following statements by the nurse would provide the UAP with the best directions about the assignment?”
    • A. “Encourage the client to increase daily fluid intake.”
    • B. “Ambulate the client 20 ft (6.7 m) every 4 hours beginning at 0900.”
    • C. “Assist the client in performing passive range-of-motion (ROM) exercises.”
    • D. “Reinforce physical therapy instructions about the proper use of a walker.”
Sample NCLEX-PN Question for Health Promotion and Maintenance: The nurse reinforces teaching a client about the signs of hunger in a newborn. Which of the following signs should the nurse reinforce? Select all that apply)
    • A. Open hands
    • B. Quivering bottom lip
    • C. Rooting movements
    • D. Sucking on the hands
    • E. Hand-to-mouth movements
  • Since the NCLEX PN exam can take up to 5 hours, NCLEX PN prep is very important. An average benchmark for prep time is to study at least 3 to 4 hours each day for at least a month before exam day. Online practice tests are a great way to prepare for the NCLEX PN exam. Peterson’s gives you access to full-length practice tests and quizzes to help you get ready for test day.
  • Taking an NCLEX PN review course will benefit you greatly on the exam day. You’ll also want to make sure you are familiar with the categories and topics covered on the exam.  The four key categories, Safe & Effective Care Environment, Health Promotion and Maintenance, Psychosocial Integrity, and Physiological Integrity, should be studied closely for NCLEX-PN review. Utilizing practice tests is a great way to review what will be asked on the exam.
  • In 2022, the minimum NCLEX PN passing score is -0.32 logits. Since the exam is conducted as a computer-adaptive test, the computer automatically stops asking questions when it is 95% sure your ability is above or below passing standards.
  • When ready to take the NCLEX PN exam, you must apply through your state nursing board. To apply and register, you must provide proof of nursing education. Each state has different requirements for providing nursing credentials, so you should check with your state regulatory nursing board before registering. The NCLEX-PN registration fee is $200, and you’ll have up to one year to complete the exam after registration. Register on the official website of the National Council of State Boards of Nursing.
