FAQs

What is the American Foreign Service Officer exam?

The American Foreign Service Officer Exam is a multiple-choice examination that consists of the following sections:

  • Job-related knowledge including world and U.S. history and geography, the U.S. Constitution, and principles of economics
  • English expression which measures your skill in written English
  • Biographical questionnaire which assesses the candidate’s experience, skills, and achievements in school, employment, and other activities
  • The essay is used to evaluate the candidate’s ability to analyze a topic, organize and develop appropriate ideas, and then express these ideas in a cogent essay

Who takes the American Foreign Service Officer exam?

The American Foreign Service Officer Exam is a written test that measures a candidate’s aptitude for working as a foreign service officer (FSO) with the U.S. Department of State.

It also measures the aptitude of candidates for positions as Foreign Commercial Service (FCS) officers with the Department of Commerce.

When is the American Foreign Service Officer Exam given?

The exam is held once each year at locations throughout the United States and at Foreign Service posts abroad. Contact either the Department of State or Department of Commerce for further details.

How is the American Foreign Service Officer Exam scored?

If your exam is a short-answer exam, a personnel officer trained in grading test questions will grade your answers. If you blackened spaces on the separate answer sheet accompanying a multiple-choice exam, a machine will scan your answer sheet or a grader will use a punched card stencil to score it. Then a raw score will be calculated using the scoring formula that applies to that test or test portion – rights only, rights minus wrongs, or rights minus a fraction of wrongs. Your total raw score is the sum of your raw scores on all test parts.
