- The American Literature CLEP exam assesses your knowledge of literary works—including their content, background, and authors—and your ability to comprehend poetry, fiction/nonfiction prose, and terminology. The College Level Examination Program, or the CLEP, is a collection of standardized tests that measure your knowledge of certain subjects. Students can earn college credit at thousands of colleges and universities by scoring satisfactorily on the computer-based CLEP exams.
- The American Literature CLEP exam contains approximately 100 questions covering the following topics:
- The Precolonial, Colonial and Early National Period (Beginnings–1800): 15%
- The Romantic Period (1800–1865): 20%
- The Period of Realism and Naturalism (1865–1910): 20%
- The Modernist Period (1910–1945): 20%
- The Contemporary Period (1945–Present): 25%
- If you’ve taken an American Literature course, taking the CLEP American Literature exam is an excellent opportunity to earn college credit. By taking CLEP exams, you can apply prior or current knowledge to get a head start on your higher education pathway, enhance your degree, and save time and money on courses. Students can take various exams on entry-level collegiate topics to bypass these courses in college or university. Does this sound familiar? That may be because many students take CLEP tests with DSST tests. While both offer college credit, CLEP tests offer testing in mainstream subjects, while DSST test subjects are more specialized.
- Students who want to gain college credit in American Literature without taking a class can take the American Literature CLEP exam. Anyone seeking college credit can take CLEP exams.
