DO YOU HAVE ANY QUESTIONS?

Top CLT FAQs

  • The CLT, or Classic Learning Test,  is a standardized test to gauge academic readiness and abilities for college and students’ futures—examining critical thinking and aptitude. It is similar to ACT and SAT as scores can qualify students for academic scholarships and grant acceptance into universities. The state of Florida recognizes the CLT for all of its public universities and is quickly gaining acceptance by colleges and universities across the United States and abroad. You can view which colleges partner with and accept the CLT here. The test can be taken at home through a remote proctoring system or in person at a school that administers the test.
  • The CLT has three sections:
    • Verbal Reasoning
    • Grammar/Writing
    • Quantitative Reasoning
You will read passages in the verbal reasoning section, answer analogies that depend on identifying relationships in the text to questions, and provide answers to other corresponding questions. The answer you select should be based on evidence provided in the passage.  In the grammar and writing section, you will again read passages and answer questions to either correct errors in the writing or suggest an improvement; your task will be to select the best option. Sometimes, no changes may be necessary and you will select “no change”.  In the quantitative reasoning section, you answer 40 questions to the best of your ability and may not use a calculator for any portion. You will be given formulas to help in your calculations.
  • The CLT test was crafted to be shorter and more engaging than other standardized tests. While challenging, the above qualities may make it easier for some test takers.  If you struggle with answering questions, it is your advantage to answer all the questions on the CLT test, as leaving questions unanswered will hurt your performance. If you do not know the answer to a question, make an educated guess. To best prepare yourself for test day, it is important to take practice tests like the 4 available through Peterson’s Test Prep so that you can walk into test day confidently.
  • 11- 12th graders can take the CLT as an entrance exam into colleges if they accept it. 10th graders can take the CLT 10, and the CLT3-8 can be taken for students in grades 3-8 for Diagnostic and summative exams to track growth.

  • CLT prides itself on providing meaningful content with enriching, thoughtful passages with a shorter testing time. CLT also distinguishes itself based on aptitude and critical thinking skills rather than solely achievement-based, making it more accessible for folks with alternate learning experiences and education.
  • The CLT has 120 questions and uses a scaled score system that ranges from 0-120, while individual test sections are scored from 0-40. On your score report, you will also see a national percentage score indicating where you score compared to the national results of CLT test takers. Results are typically available within three weeks.
  • The CLT test is approximately two hours long, making it shorter than the SAT and ACT.  The CLT has three sections:
    • Verbal Reasoning- 40 minutes
    • Grammar/Writing- 35 minutes
    • Quantitative Reasoning- 45 minutes
  • You cannot use a calculator on the CLT test. CLT’s quantitative reasoning section is designed without calculators factored in so that you can show off your logical reasoning abilities rather than perform complex calculations.
  • Yes, you can take the CLT online through their remote proctoring system.
