FAQs

What are the CNA/HHA exams?

The Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) and Home Health Aide (HHA) exams are both multiple-choice standardized tests required by all 50 states to certify and license students that have completed the necessary training as designated by their state.

Who takes the CNA/HHA exams?

Those seeking to become a certified nursing assistant or a home health aide must receive a passing score on the CNA or HHA exams. Nursing assistants provide varying levels of care and support to physically and/or mentally disabled individuals who are unable to care for themselves. Home health aides support patients by providing a variety of in-home care, ranging from the medical to the personal.

What is on the CNA/HHA exams?

Both CNA and HHA licensing exams have similar topics related to patient care, ethics, legal issues, and roles and responsibilities. The CNA exam goes deeper and asks more technical questions, however, both exams focus on the same core topics:

  1. Activities of Daily Living
  2. Aging process
  3. Anatomy and Physiology
  4. Body Mechanics
  5. Client rights
  6. Communication
  7. Ethics and legal issues
  8. Infection control
  9. Medical terminology
  10. Mental health
  11. Nutrition
  12. Personal care
  13. Range of motion
  14. Safety
  15. Vital signs and testing

How are the CNA/HHA exams scored?

Candidates must pass with a 70 or 80 (state dependent) to pass the written exam. In addition, they must score a 70 or 80 (again check with your state) on the practical skills exam as well. They must also pass all critical skills components of the practical skills exam (such as hand washing, safety, and infection control) or they will automatically fail. If a candidate fails the practical skills exam, they will be provided with numerical codes that allow you to see where in the skillset you went wrong. For example, it might say 3, 6, 9 for handwashing. This would indicate errors on those steps for that skill.

You can only retake the test 3 times in a two-year period following your training program. After the third time, you must repeat the training program before you can test again.
