- The Defense Language Proficiency Test (DLPT) is a series of exams used by the US Department of Defense (DoD) and most federal government agencies to determine the language proficiency of their staff members and measure their ability to function as a foreign speaker of a target language in real-world situations.The DLPT is also used to measure the effectiveness of instruction and capture mission readiness. The DLPT Mandarin Exam tests an English speaker’s knowledge of and proficiency in using and speaking Mandarin language. The DLPT Mandarin Exam will test your Mandarin reading and listening skills that would be used in real-world situations.
- The DLPT Mandarin exam is administered on a regular basis to Department of Defense linguists including military linguists serving in uniform.
- The DLPT Mandarin test measures the listening comprehension and reading comprehension of an examinee who has learned Mandarin as a second language. The DLPT Mandarin exam will test your knowledge and proficiency on Mandarin verbs, nouns, adjectives, adverbs, phrases, clauses, questions, conjunctions, and vocabulary. You’ll be asked to read, listen to, and comprehend Mandarin passages. The DLPT test includes passages from original Mandarin sources that cover a range of topics from newspapers, signs, the internet, and radio and television broadcasts. The Mandarin passages on the DLPT Mandarin may be social, cultural, political, economic, geographic, scientific, or military in nature.
- The DLPT Mandarin exam is scored on the listening and reading portions of the DLPT Mandarin exam. DLPT Mandarin exam scores can range from 0+ to 3 for lower-range languages or up to 4 on upper-range languages. For example, a score of 1 plus is equivalent to 150, while a score of 2 plus is equivalent to 250. DLPT scores are related to proficiency level, not grade. The DLPT Mandarin examinees’ level scores are calculated by the number of questions they answer correctly at each level. To earn a 4, those taking the DLPT Mandarin Exam generally need to answer 75% of questions correctly to earn that level.
