FAQs

What is the Massage Therapy exam?

Today, no single national standard or process is in place to manage the licensing and practice requirements for all members of the massage and bodywork professions. Standards and requirements vary by geographic location.

For an aspiring therapist, this means the minimal requirements you must meet in order to practice may differ depending on where you intend to practice.

Most regulatory boards require a minimal amount of education and/or experience in order to be licensed. You may also have to demonstrate entry-level skill by taking and passing a written examination, a practical examination, or both.

The Massage and Bodywork Licensing Examination (MBLEx), regulated by the Federation of State Massage Therapy Boards, or FSMTB, is administered via Pearson VUE. The MBLEx is an entry-level licensure exam administered in 46 jurisdictions nationwide.

Who takes the Massage Therapy exam?

Those seeking to become a licensed massage therapist will want to take the MBLEx.

What is on the Massage Therapy exam?

The MBLEx exam consists of 100 computer-adaptive questions that include the following content: anatomy and physiology, kinesiology, pathology, therapeutic massage and bodywork assessment, therapeutic massage and bodywork application, professional standards and legal and business practices.

How is the Massage Therapy exam scored?

The MBLEx is scored on a scale from 300-900 with 630 as a minimum passing score for a massage therapist. The results are available at the testing center immediately after the exam.

You are only allowed to  retake the exam three times in a two-year period following your training program. After the third time, you must repeat the training program before you can test again.
