Mississippi State University (Bachelor of Science in Interdisciplinary Studies) - Overview
Bachelor of Science in Interdisciplinary Studies
The Bachelor of Science in Interdisciplinary Studies (BSIS) is a degree program designed especially for adult students. Its intent is to allow students maximum flexibility to custom-design curriculums to their personal and career goals. The program requires the completion of the common core curriculum as set by the Board of Trustees, Institutions of Higher Learning of the State of Mississippi, as well as 36 upper-division hours in the areas chosen for emphasis. The emphasis areas must include 18 hours from two concentrations or 12 hours from three. At least two of the concentrations must be from different academic colleges within the university. To assure breadth of study as well as depth, students also must complete 12 hours of core electives and 32 hours of general electives supporting their concentration areas.
Concentration areas currently include technology, communication, general business, geosciences, sociology, social work, and psychology.
This degree offers only the upper level courses for this degree program (third and fourth years). Students may transfer lower level credits from institutions of higher education. The academic courses leading to the associate of arts degree at most community colleges meet Mississippi State University core requirements for the BSIS degree program. In addition, MSU has created partnerships with several community colleges regarding the BSIS degree. Students will complete the first two years of the program at the community college and then transfer to MSU to complete (all online) the last two years.
All courses offered in the BSIS program are fully accredited through Mississippi State University by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS).
Requirements for the Program
For successful completion of the program, it is recommended that students have Internet access via DSL or equivalent broadband connectivity option. Traditional dial-up Internet services do not provide adequate support to the many technologies used within the program.
Tuition is assessed on a per credit hour basis at the prevailing rates as determined by the Institution of Higher Learning, the government board of the University. In addition to tuition, students may be assessed distance fees for each course they take. These rates are subject to change. Textbooks are not included in the tuition rates. Students must order textbooks each semester for all courses in which they are enrolled. Some courses may require additional materials, such as lab manuals. All textbooks are available for online purchase via the Mississippi State University's Barnes & Noble bookstore.
