Programs of Study

All students at Santa Fe University of Art and Design receive a well-rounded liberal arts education. This core curriculum is taught by a faculty of scholars, artists, and professionals.

Art: Students may earn a Bachelor of Arts or a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Studio Arts. Coursework includes painting, drawing, sculpture, mixed media and installation art. The department also offers minors in Art History or Studio Art.

Arts Management: The Bachelor of Business Administration in Arts Management expands on the traditional business degree model so students can apply their knowledge to the arts management field. Career possibilities are vast, and include museum director, art critic, gallery owner, cultural events planner, creative services director and entrepreneur.

Creative Writing: The BA in Creative Writing program is a rigorous program in which students choose 2 genre specializations to study. Choices include poetry, fiction, creative non-fiction and screenwriting. Collaboration and student critiques on original work are essential to the program, as is the mentor relationship forged with faculty members.

Graphic Design: The BFA in Graphic Design examines the dual nature of graphic design: as a vehicle for artistic expression and as a specialized profession. Students will explore the fundamental principles of 2D, 3D, and 4D design, and an introduction to the newest digital image-making tools.

Digital Arts: The BFA in Digital Arts program covers a wide range of digital media, including 2D and 3D imaging and animation, graphic design, digital photography, and time-based digital arts. Students may choose from 3 areas of emphasis: "Animation," "Digital Illustration," or "Web Publishing."

Film/Video: The BA in Moving Image Arts program integrates film, video and digital production with writing and critical studies. In this 4-year program, students have opportunities to focus on one of 3 specific disciplines: "Production," "Screenwriting," or "Critical Studies and Film History."

Contemporary Music: The BA in Contemporary Music prepares students for a wide range of creative careers in music. Skills in performance, technology, composition and recording arts are paired with studies in world music, music theory and music history. Faculty members expose students to a variety of styles and genres of music through performances, workshops, seminars and master classes.

Photography: Students may earn either BAs in Photography or BFAs in Photography. Both degree programs offer a comprehensive education in the theory, techniques, history and ethics of photography, and encompasses both analog and digital technologies. Students in the BA program take core courses in studio and history, and may pursue multiple minors. BFA students concentrate on in-depth study through studio instruction, practicum experiences, and internships.

Performing Arts: The Performing Arts department introduces students to all facets of stage production and offers several degree programs and specializations. Students may choose from the BA in Theatre Design, BA in Theatre Performance, or BFA in Theatre. Specializations include "Acting," "Dance," "Design/Technical," and "Music Theatre."

Self-Designed: Students have the option to design their own major programs according to their areas of interest and goals.
