Sierra College (International Student Information)

Overview

Location

Sierra College is located in the foothills of the beautiful Sierra Nevada Mountains of northern California. The college was established in 1936, and the spacious 300-acre tree-lined campus in Rocklin, California, is a short distance from Sacramento, the state capital Close to the college are a wide range of recreational opportunities such as golfing, skiing, shopping and sightseeing opportunities. The college is less than two hours drive from the famous Lake Tahoe region. Its unique location also means that the college campus is only two hours drive from San Francisco.

Degree Opportunities

With an enrollment of approximately 20,000 students, Sierra College has a national reputation of excellence and offers more than 70 associate degree programs, including business, communication studies, computer science, engineering, marketing, and many more. At Sierra College you have the opportunity to do preparation that allows you to transfer into any major at a 4 year university. Students who want to transfer into pre-law, pre-med, or teaching can finish the first half of a bachelor's degree at Sierra College.

Transfer

Sierra College prepares many graduates to transfer to top quality universities to complete their final two years of undergraduate work. The affordable tuition fees at Sierra are about half of the cost of a California state university. The college provides international students with individualized services to help students transition from Sierra College to the four-year college or university of their choice. UC Berkeley, UC Davis, UCLA, UC San Diego, and California State University Sacramento are some of the many colleges chosen by Sierra's transfer students. Two years at Sierra and two years at another California university can equal a bachelor's degree.

English as a Second Language

Sierra College offers a multi-level (beginning through advanced) ESL program throughout the year, which has start dates in August and January. The program is designed for students who wish to improve their reading, writing, speaking, and listening skills. Enrollment in the ESL program provides the opportunity for students to be admitted to Sierra without a TOEFL score or with a TOEFL score of less than 45 iBT or 133 CBT.

Student Support Services

A range of support services are available to assist students in being successful. International students on arrival at the college are each assigned their own personal academic counselor who is focused on helping them reach their educational goal. The college also operates a tutor center and a writing center and provides free one on one tutoring. Sierra College has an extensive learning resource center with study rooms, computer labs and a drop-in math center. An excellent faculty, smaller classes, and lower tuition fees are great advantages for international students.

Sierra students may participate in an active student government and many campus clubs, intercollegiate athletics, and intramural sports. Sports facilities include a pool, a gymnasium, a fitness/cardio room, and fields for soccer and football. There is also a theater, an art gallery, and a science museum.

Housing

Sierra College is located in a safe family environment and offers three housing options: on-campus, homestay, and rentals.

Sierra is one of the few community colleges in California to have residence halls on campus. The rate includes a weekly food allowance and all utilities.

For students wishing to live with an American family, they may apply for the homestay program. Students and families will decide on one of two rates; the rate depends on if food is included or not.

The International Students Office has information on a variety of rentals: apartments, rooms for rent, people looking for roommates, etc. Students may stop by the office or e-mail to find out about the listings.
