Location

Known as Music City USA, Nashville is the capital of Tennessee and is a major center of the music industry--not just of the United States, but the entire world. Located on the Cumberland River, the city is a virtual crossroads of American culture and one of the region's fastest-growing metro areas. Nashville is also an important hub of the health care, publishing, and transportation industries.

Named for Revolutionary War hero Francis Nash, the city took advantage of its strategic location and its accessibility as a river port major railroad hub. The booming post-Civil War economy left Nashville with a legacy of classical-style, iconic buildings--not the least of which is the Parthenon, built in 1897 as a full-scale replica of the ancient structure in Athens, Greece. Today Nashville's Parthenon serves as an art museum featuring everything from classical exhibits to the work of modern artists such as Andy Warhol. It also is responsible for Nashville's other, although lesser-known nickname: the Athens of the South.

The Tennessee Performing Arts Center is the home of the Tennessee Repertory Theatre, Nashville Children's Theatre, the Nashville Opera, and the Nashville Ballet. The Nashville Symphony Orchestra performs regularly at The Schermerhorn Symphony Center. The city's museums and galleries include the renowned Frist Center for the Visual Arts. The Nashville Film Festival is one of the biggest film festivals in the Southern United States. It runs for a week in April and features hundreds of independent films. The Country Music Marathon, which also runs every April, typically draws 25,000 participants from around the world.

The home of the world-famous Grand Ole Opry since 1925, Nashville also hosts a number of professional sports teams, including the NFL's Tennessee Titans and the Nashville Predators of the National Hockey League.
