Location

The Art Institute of York-Pennsylvania is nestled in a community that's steeped in American history, is close to some of America's great cities, and offers a great blend of small-town charm, convenience, and laid-back lifestyle.

Depending on historic lore, York is either the nation's first capital...or the fourth, after Philadelphia; Baltimore, Maryland; and Lancaster, Pennsylvania. It was on the York County Colonial Court House where the words "The United States of America" were first formally proclaimed--and where the first Constitution was adopted.

A leisurely stroll through downtown York offers a taste of the lives of immigrant pioneers, Revolutionary War soldiers, 19th-century farmers, and the craftspeople of today. This is a town that blends the stories of military heroes, business tycoons, and factory workers.

The city has been referred to as an architectural museum, because the downtown features an assortment of well-preserved historic buildings, including the Golden Plough Tavern, which dates back to 1741; the General Horatio Gates House from 1751; the 1766 York Meetinghouse; the 1863 Billmeyer House; the 1888 York Central Market; and the 1907 Moorish Revival Temple Beth Israel. York boasts not just one, but four national historic districts: the Fairmount Historic District, the Northwest York Historic District, the Springdale Historic District, and the York Historic District.

The York County area features several major shopping malls and many outlet shopping centers. With its strong manufacturing and industrial base, the area consistently has one of the lowest unemployment rates in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. Students can enjoy a meal, from casual to elegant, at one of the many eateries and restaurants in the downtown area and surrounding the city. York also features two farmers markets, offering fresh fruits, vegetables, homemade baked goods, and more.

The beautiful seaport city of Baltimore is just 45 minutes away, and Harrisburg and Lancaster are just a half-hour drive from The Art Institute of York-Pennsylvania.
