Distance Learning Program for Undergraduate Students

The Center for Distance Education (CDE) at Upper Iowa University (UIU) offers students global access to online programs and independent study opportunities. Students complete bachelor's degrees through one of the university's 20 locations without residency requirements. The asynchronous nature of the online courses also allows students to participate in class activities on their own schedule. The flexibility and convenience of these programs makes them popular among students, such as military personnel, who are unable to participate in traditional college classes.

The online program offers 18 majors to undergraduates, in addition to 5 certificate programs. UIU's simple and convenient transfer policy also allows students the opportunity to transfer up to 90 credit hours when entering their bachelor's program. These programs are supported by dedicated faculty members of Upper Iowa University who are successful and knowledgeable experts in their given fields.

UIU is nationally recognized for its achievements in distance education. The CDE has ranked in the top 5 online degree-granting universities by Online Education Database (OEDB), and the CLA Learning Report ranks UIU in the top 25 percent of colleges in the country for enhancement of student learning.

18 Bachelor's Degrees Available

Upper Iowa University offers 18 bachelor's degrees that can be completed through a combination of on campus and online classes. All degrees received through the online program or academic extension program are presented as a Bachelor of Science (BS) degrees. Bachelor's degrees are available in 10 different areas: business, communications, criminal justice, emergency and disaster management, health services administration, human services, information technology, psychology, public administration, and social science. Business degrees include majors in 7 more specific areas: accounting, business administration, financial management, human resources management, management, management information, and marketing. The public administration program offers areas of emphasis in general studies, law enforcement, or fire science.

Students enroll for 2 full-credit courses at a time for an 8-week term. With 2 summer terms, this leaves students the opportunity to complete 6 sets of courses in a year. Examples of courses available during every term include Management Information Systems, Economics of International Business, Psychology of Disaster, and Public Speaking.

UIU's Independent Study Program

Since 1973, Upper Iowa University has offered 14 majors and 5 certificate programs to undergraduate students around the world through their independent study program. One of the first of its kind in the nation, the program is modeled after a traditional correspondence learning program, but offers students a measure of flexibility that is not available through traditional coursework. The program offers students access to more than 100 courses that are delivered by mail or email. Each course uses texts, study guides, and other course materials that capitalize on students' existing skills in time management, critical thinking, and active participation. Courses can be completed as quickly as other UIU courses, or students can work at their own paces and take up to 6 months to complete each course.

5 Professional Certificate Programs

Upper Iowa University offers undergraduate students the opportunity to complete 5 specific professional certificates: emergency and disaster management, human resources management, marketing, organizational communications, and organizational leadership. Each certificate allows students to complete a group of interrelated courses to gain experience in a specific area. Since certificate programs are drawn directly from regular UIU courses, many students choose to complete a certificate program while working toward their degrees.

Certificates may be earned through the online program, independent study program, or on campus at several UIU education centers. Certificates may be completed for credit or for non-academic credit. Students may transfer 9-15 previous credit hours into the program, including courses taken through outside institutions and learning portfolio credits from UIU.

Financial Aid Opportunities

Graduates of Upper Iowa University have less debt on average than graduates of any other private university in Iowa, in large part because of the "aggressive approach" the UIU financial aid office takes toward financial assistance. The university works with distance learning students and non-traditional students to provide as much financial assistance as possible, including aid through 18 undergraduate academic extension scholarships and a number of major-specific, regional, and general scholarships.

Scholarships available include the Talbots Women's Scholarship, the AICPA Scholarship for minority accounting students, and the Betty Franklin-Hammonds Scholarship for African-American students from Madison, Wisconsin.

Iowa residents may also be eligible for Iowa Tuition Grants, which provide the difference between UIU tuition and the average tuition at the Regent universities. Qualifying students in UIU's distance education program may also be eligible to receive veterans' benefits.
