Overview

True Talents Emerge as Students Pursue Their Passion

Virginia Intermont (VI) is a private, coeducational college in Bristol, Virginia, with a longstanding commitment to the liberal arts education. Accredited by the Southern Association of College and Schools Commission on Colleges, VI offers bachelor's degrees in more than 40 academic concentrations.

A recent graduate says it best: "Virginia Intermont is a small college that opens doors to big opportunities." VI's peaceful, historic setting and friendly campus offer a learning environment that fosters personal and intellectual growth, and each student is encouraged to develop his or her individual talents. Engaging professors work closely with each student and encourage lively classroom discussion among peers.

Learning and leadership opportunities extend beyond the classroom with professional internships, undergraduate research, educational travel and workshops, all of which add to the academic experience. An honors program and evening and weekend classes for adult learners also cater to the individual needs of students. Through the College?s tutoring center, career services and other student support, each student receives personalized attention that helps inspire them to pursue their passion and find their voice.

Distinguished Programs Put VI on the Map

VI recently joined the Common Application, facilitating the admissions process for students interested in obtaining a Bachelor of Arts, Bachelor of Fine Arts, Bachelor of Science or Bachelor of Social Work degree. In addition to popular majors in the arts and sciences, education and business, the College offers innovative curricular programs and specialized studies with new programs in the Classics, Equine Assisted Therapy, and Cultural Heritage Studies. VI has the distinction of being one of only two colleges in the nation to earn certification in the EAGALA-endorsed equine therapy program. The cultural heritage program hones in on the culturally rich Southwest Virginia region with new courses and hands-on experience in cultural studies and public arts through coordinated training and internships.

With one of the largest Equine Studies programs in the U.S., Virginia Intermont is a powerhouse in equestrian competition. VI equestrian teams benefit from a 100-acre riding center with indoor riding and have won 15 national championship titles in intercollegiate riding since 2001.

VI's stellar program in photography and digital imaging provides students with extraordinary opportunities to work in the community through professional affiliations. VI photography students have been official photographers at Bristol's famous "Rhythm and Roots Reunion" and at the Bristol Motor Speedway races. Distinguished alumni include a 2001 graduate who won the Pulitzer Prize for Feature Photography in 2008.

Experiential Learning Prepares Students for Success

In addition to quality teaching and a comprehensive curriculum, students are exposed to educational opportunities both in the local community and abroad that contribute to a well-rounded education. Professors in nearly every academic discipline lead study trips or offer stimulating workshops. Virginia Intermont photography & digital imaging students capture coastal and western landscapes, while theatre arts majors hone technique at the Lincoln Center in Washington, D.C. Literature and creative writing majors learn from practicing published poets, while aspiring artists experience contemporary exhibitions at major metropolitan museums.

Convocation speakers of national and international stature bring the world to campus; guest speakers have included human rights activist Naomi Tutu, Pulitzer Prize-winning photojournalist and VI alumna Preston Gannaway, Chief White House Correspondent for NBC News, Chuck Todd, and anthropologist Bill Bass.

High achieving students may apply to the Honors Program and receive a tuition scholarship and participate in learning enrichment opportunities. The Worrell Honors Program for Studies Abroad offers Honors students in all disciplines the opportunity to participate in a study program centered in Munich, Germany.

Internships available in many fields provide students a period of concentrated work experience during which they have opportunities to test career choices, to integrate theory with practice, and to explore future employment opportunities. VI students have recently completed internships in banks, congressional offices, recreation departments, manufacturing corporations, social and governmental agencies, hospitals, schools, churches, galleries, museums, and law offices.

On and Off Campus, Students Seek a Balanced Life

Virginia Intermont attracts energetic and talented students, many who are involved in sports, music and theatre productions, art and photography exhibitions, student clubs, and service organizations. The College awards over $4 million annually in merit, athletic and performance-based scholarships.

Intercollegiate sports are big part of campus life whether students are active participants or cheering spectators. In addition to equestrian sports, VI fields nine athletic teams, which compete in National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) and the Appalachian Athletic Conference (AAC). Men's teams compete in golf, basketball, baseball and soccer; women's sports include softball, basketball, soccer and volleyball, and the College has a co-ed cycling team. Students are also involved in a variety of intramural sports including flag football, bowling and paintball.

The name "Intermont," which means "among the mountains," perfectly describes VI's scenic setting along the foothills of the Holston Range and Blue Ridge Mountains. The Tri-Cities region (including Johnson City and Kingsport) boasts a population of over 500,000 and offers countless cultural and outdoor attractions. Students enjoy the historic downtown district, area music venues, the Appalachian Trail and nearby skiing, as well as the urban amenities and proximity to Roanoke, VA; Knoxville, TN; and Asheville, NC ? all less than two hours away.
