Graduate Programs at Bank Street

Bank Street's Graduate School of Education focuses on innovative approaches to learner-centered education. The programs are grounded in a deep understanding of human development, curricula that encourages discovery and engagement, and an emphasis on integrating theory with practice. Bank Street's pioneering ideas have profoundly influenced successful teaching and learning approaches in school classrooms, museums, and other learning environments in communities across the nation.

The Graduate School offers Master of Science, Master of Science in Education, and Master of Education degrees. The master's degree programs all engage students through active participation in small classes and discussion groups, combined with extensive supervised fieldwork and advisement. The Bank Street approach combines direct experience with children, teachers, and families with theoretical material and with observation and reflection. The Graduate School prepares individuals to be educators who facilitate learning, aim for clear educational objectives, and encourage learners to engage fully in the process of discovery and of creating understanding.

Bank Street's master's degree programs include child life, teacher preparation, special education programs for those hoping to teach students with disabilities, and school leadership programs. The education programs lead to initial and professional certification to work with children in early childhood education, elementary or childhood education, preparing individuals to work in general education classrooms or in special education settings. Graduate students may also choose programs in literacy specialization, bilingual education, and museum education. Those graduate students with initial certification from undergraduate programs will find a full range of programs that will lead them to professional certification including curriculum and instruction, teaching students with disabilities, and teacher leader in mathematics education.

The Graduate School is accredited by the Regents Accreditation of Teacher Education and by the Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools, and has been accepted for formal review for accreditation by NCATE, the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education.

Components of a Master's Degree

Most of the degree programs at Bank Street are comprised of 3 components: course work, supervised fieldwork, and an integrative master's project. Course work focuses on human development, curriculum and inquiry, ways of engaging children as active learners, and the foundations of education. Students explore educational theories through readings, discussion, problem-solving assignments, and models of discovery and engagement. Theory and practice are integrated in all components of a Bank Street education.

Students immerse themselves in supervised fieldwork while taking their academic courses, rather than doing fieldwork at the end of their programs. Students are placed in classroom settings or other settings appropriate to their programs, generally working in that setting 3 days a week. Those who are assistant teachers or head teachers, or who already work in museum education departments or child life settings, may use their own setting for their fieldwork. Graduate students are supervised in the field by an adviser who offers guidance and support. Students meet with their advisors individually twice monthly, and also meet weekly with their advisors and other students currently involved in fieldwork in small conference groups of 5 to 7 students. Together, students explore how to practically apply their classroom knowledge.

The integrative master's project is the culmination of a student's study. Students may choose to complete their master's projects over the course of an academic year through independent study or by compiling a portfolio of significant developments and achievements. Students already employed in their chosen fields may decide to complete a semester-based master's project: an inquiry option - researching a question related to the student's current job - may be completed individually or collaboratively; the mentor-directed essay allows a student to work individually with a faculty member to develop an essay reflective of his or her program experiences.

Financial Aid

Financial aid is available in the form of scholarships, federal loans, and federal work-study positions. Most of our scholarships are need-based.
