Overview

The BAC Difference

The Boston Architectural College (BAC) is an independent, professional college in Boston's Back Bay focusing on providing excellence in design education by combining classroom learning, real-world practice, and accessibility to diverse communities. The BAC offers fully accredited graduate and undergraduate professional degree programs in Architecture, Interior Architecture, and Landscape Architecture, as well as a four-year Bachelor of Design Studies and specialized graduate degrees in Historic Preservation, Design for Human Health, and Sustainable Design.

Founded in 1889 as a club for practicing architects in the local Boston area, the BAC has remained closely tied to the professional design community throughout its history. These connections allow the College to uphold its founding principle of integrated design education. BAC faculty are both teachers and practicing professionals, and they maintain a commitment to combining academic and experiential, practice-based learning.

The BAC's commitment to diversifying the design professions is achieved through a policy of accessible admission. Alternative admissions makes an exceptional design education possible for talented students who would not otherwise be afforded such an opportunity. Beneficiaries include a large population of first-generation college students and members of under-represented groups, fostering a rich and diverse learning environment. Together, these aims make the BAC a leader in the education of design professionals.

Through the BAC's dynamic learning model, students acquire academic knowledge in the classroom while receiving applied learning through practical experiences in the field. This trajectory helps students make connections between theoretical and practical approaches and equips them with the necessary tools for solving complex projects and design parameters for today's global and diverse communities.

First-year students at the BAC experience a 27-credit interdisciplinary foundation program that allows students to learn basic design skills in a collaborative learning environment. The foundation year features the City-Lab Intensive, an orientation where student engage in a series of hands-on reflective exercises centered on the exploration of the city of Boston.

An active and supportive student-life on campus provides for excellence in the classroom. Atelier, the Student Government, offers events throughout the year for students to connect on campus. The BAC also hosts student chapters for major design organizations, including AIAS, IDS, SASLA, and NOMAS, and has an active mentorship program with alumni, opening multiple networking opportunities for students throughout their course of study.

The BAC campus is located in the heart of the Boston, one of the most popular cities in the country for students and young professionals. The main building on Newbury Street is located blocks from the Charles River Esplanade and the Boston Common and Public Gardens, and it is surrounded by the Museum of Fine Arts, Fenway Park, and countless cultural landmarks, restaurants, shops, and museums.

As a member of the Pro-Arts Consortium, BAC has an exchange with Berklee College of Music, Emerson College, MassArt, New England Conservatory, Boston Conservatory, and the School of the MFA. BAC students have the opportunity to expand their education and professional network through courses at each of these colleges.

The BAC also offers distance graduate programs in Architecture, Historic Preservation, Design for Human Health and Sustainable Design. Students in these programs experience the same rigor and richness of the traditional classroom experience through a virtual classroom. In addition, students have the opportunity to travel to Boston for an eight-day intensive each semester.

Financial Aid at the BAC

The Financial Aid Office at the BAC is dedicated to assisting students in financing their educational goals. We recognize that studying at the BAC represents a significant investment in the future and are committed to helping students navigate the application process.

The BAC accepts federal and state financial aid through the FAFSA and offers the Dean's Scholarship on a competitive basis to new and incoming domestic and international students.

Applying to the BAC

The BAC maintains a policy of open admission for all on-site degree programs, stemming from the philosophy that those who wish to pursue the study and practice of design deserve an opportunity to do so. Admission decisions are made throughout the year on a rolling basis. Students interested in being considered for our Dean's Scholarships should complete their applications by the priority deadlines of February 15th for Fall Semester admission or November 15th for Spring Semester admission.
