Overview

Graduate Programs at Brooklyn College

Since 1935, the Division of Graduate Studies at Brooklyn College has provided an excellent graduate education at reasonable cost. The division offers more than 60 full-time and part-time programs leading to master's degrees and advanced certificates. Its proximity to New York City provides opportunities for internships and field study in Manhattan, Brooklyn, and throughout New York.

Located in Brooklyn -- the most populous borough in New York City -- the college is home to more than 17,000 students. With a student body that represents over 100 nations, the college's community is a microcosm of culturally-diverse Brooklyn and mirrors the diversity of the entire city.

The Department of Psychology at Brooklyn College

Brooklyn College offers more than 70 undergraduate and 60 graduate majors. It also offers advanced certificates and programs in the humanities, education, performing arts, sciences, and social sciences.

Brooklyn College's extensive library, outstanding faculty, state-of-the-art research facilities, and comprehensive support services help graduate students -- many of whom are working professionals -- gain the knowledge needed to build successful careers.

The college's reputation for educational excellence has attracted some of the most notable figures in academia including celebrated psychologist Abraham Maslow, who developed the concept of a "hierarchy of needs."

Brooklyn College's Department of Psychology offers both undergraduate and graduate degree programs. The department prepares students for both graduate training and professional service in the field.

With curricula that adhere to the American Psychological Association's standards, the department offers a doctoral program in psychology as well as a Master of Arts in Experimental Psychology, Industrial and Organizational Psychology, and Mental Health Counseling.

Distinguished Faculty

The Department of Psychology's accomplished faculty members possess a comprehensive body of knowledge in the field of psychology. Their areas of expertise include comparative neuroscience, applied neuroscience, cognitive development, basic sensory processes, and social-organizational behavior.

Faculty members are awarded grants; publish books and research findings in scholarly journals; speak at conferences, seminars, and symposiums; and receive awards and honors for their work.

For example, distinguished professor Anthony Sclafani recently received a 2-year, $222,775 grant from the Ajinomoto Amino Acid Research Grant to continue his work on the biopsychology of appetite, food preferences, and obesity.

M.A. in Experimental Psychology

The M.A. in Experimental Psychology focuses on broad areas in cognition, learning, and perception. Strong emphasis is also placed on physiological, developmental, and social psychology.

The program prepares students for careers in basic and applied research in a variety of settings. Because it is approximately the same as the first 30 credits of the doctoral program in cognition, brain, and behavior, the master's program also prepares students for doctoral study.

M. A. in Mental Health Counseling

The M.A. in Mental Health Counseling combines experiential learning with comprehensive course work. Students are required to complete 3,000 hours of supervised, post-degree clinical work, primarily with adults and families.

After completing this practicum, students are eligible to take a licensing exam that enables them to enter into private practice.

M.A. in Industrial and Organizational Psychology

Brooklyn College's M.A. in Industrial and Organizational Psychology prepares students for the study of behavior in work settings.

Upon graduation, students are qualified to acquire entry-level, executive positions as generalists. Graduates may work in the areas of personnel and human resources in organizations or work for consulting firms that offer services in these areas.

The program offers two concentrations: human relations and organizational psychology and behavior.

The Concentration in Human Relations

Students who choose the human relations concentration develop personal and social awareness, gain an understanding of the individual acting in a social context, and acquire knowledge of group processes and evaluation techniques.

The program focuses on developing human relations facilitators who are capable of promoting behavioral change and skill building in a wide range of organizations in both public and private settings.

The Concentration in Organizational Psychology and Behavior

The organizational psychology and behavior concentration provides training in individual, group, and organizational processes while emphasizing a psychodynamic and sociotechnical orientation.

The program focuses on training management generalists and individuals who plan to specialize in the human resources and organizational development areas.

M.A. Degree Requirements

To earn an M.A. in Experimental Psychology or Industrial and Organizational Psychology, students must earn 30 to 36 credits. At least 24 of those credits must be taken in the Department of Psychology.

After students have completed 24 credits of psychology courses, they must pass a comprehensive examination. The exam, which can only be taken twice, is designed to determine students' mastery of the curriculum. In addition, students must submit a thesis or take an additional 6 credits of courses.

To acquire an M.A. in Mental Health Counseling, students must earn 60 credits. Forty-eight of them must be taken in the Department of Psychology. In addition, students must pass a comprehensive examination that can be taken after completing 48 credits.

Doctoral Program in Psychology

The Department of Psychology's doctoral program provides a solid education in cognitive psychology. It prepares students for careers in basic and applied research.

This full-time program enables Ph.D. candidates to actively engage in research, coursework, and teaching. To give students the opportunity to focus primarily on their studies, financial support has been provided for all students.

Students may enhance their scholarly pursuits by taking relevant courses at the Graduate Center, other CUNY colleges, and local universities including Columbia and New York University.

Academic Support Services

Brooklyn College provides a wide-range of resources that enhance students' ability to earn their degrees. Security escort services, food services, legal counseling, a 24-hour emergency medical hotline, and a medical clinic, among other services, contribute to students' health and well-being.

The college's art gallery and performing arts center provide culture and entertainment for Brooklyn College's community and surrounding communities.

In addition, students can improve their academic skills at the learning center, and the career center helps them build job search skills, secure internships, and acquire full-time positions.

Life in Brooklyn

The college's beautiful campus is situated in the heart of Brooklyn, one of New York City's most vibrant and culturally-rich boroughs. Although the college does not provide housing, it operates a housing and roommate referral service that connects students to affordable housing near campus and in surrounding neighborhoods.

In addition, Brooklyn's restaurants, entertainment, and cultural venues provide an exciting environment in which to live and study. Since midtown Manhattan is only 45 minutes away, students have numerous opportunities to expand their social, recreational, and cultural horizons.
