Flexible Graduate Education Programs for Working Adults

The Hamline University School of Education offers a variety of graduate programs for working adults interested in expanding their mastery of teaching, developing their leadership, and expanding their careers in education and related fields.

Most of the graduate programs offered by Hamline's School of Education are available on campus, online, or in a low-residency format.

The Master of Arts in Teaching, Initial Licensure Program

Hamline School of Education offers a Master of Arts in Teaching (M.A.T.) degree program that prepares students for rewarding teaching careers. Students earn an initial teaching license in a chosen area such as K-6 elementary education; 5-12 mathematics; and 9-12 life science, chemistry, or physics.

In addition to offering student teaching placements in Minnesota, Hamline has partnered with Educators Abroad to offer student teaching opportunities in more than 60 countries.

A Flexible M.A. Program in Education with a Variety of Specialization Options

The Master of Arts in Education (M.A.Ed.) degree program at Hamline provides working adults with a flexible option for professional growth in the field of education.

The 34-credit M.A.Ed. degree program can be completed in 18 to 24 months. Students can choose a variety of specializations such as adult English as a second language (E.S.L.), autism spectrum disorders, or college admission counseling. Students may also design their own specializations.

This program is offered fully online or students may also take course work on campus.

The M.A.Ed. in Natural Science and Environmental Education

The M.A.Ed. in Natural Science and Environmental Education (N.S.E.E.) degree program prepares students to advance their careers in settings focused on environmental education from K-12 classrooms to education settings such as schools, zoos, parks, or museums.

In addition to completing 23 credits of core coursework, students complete 12 credits of electives in science or environmental education. Final capstone projects are required.

Students may complete the program online and some coursework is offered via off-site weekend classes or intensive, week-long summer sessions.

An English as a Second Language Master's Program with 3 Concentration Options

Hamline's E.S.L. master's degree program provides a strong foundation in areas such as language systems, the relationship between language and culture, and assessing students' language skills.

Students who wish to teach English as a second language may choose concentrations in either adult E.S.L. education, or K-12 E.S.L. education. Students interested in teaching English abroad may choose the Teaching English as a Foreign Language (T.E.F.L.) concentration.

The number of credits in the E.S.L. master's degree varies by concentration. Each student must complete a capstone thesis. Coursework can be completed online or on campus.

A Master of Arts in Literacy Education

The Master of Arts in Literacy Education program at Hamline University provides educators with a solid foundation in literacy instruction and prepares them to teach literacy to students from a wide range of cultural backgrounds and developmental levels.

The literacy education master's degree program is comprised of 24 credits of required coursework and 10 elective credits. Core courses include "Essentials in Literacy and Learning," "Literacy Leadership and Coaching," and "Critical Literacy."

The M.A. in literacy education degree program is a cohort that is offered in a face-to-face format each fall and in a fully-online format each spring.

The Doctoral Degree in Education (Ed.D.) at Hamline University

Hamline's Doctoral Degree in Education (Ed.D.) program is designed for students interested in growing their careers as teachers and researchers in fields such as social work, K-12 education, higher education, and staff development.

Students progress through the program in cohorts that meet several times each semester. To earn an Ed.D. degree, each student must complete 68 hours of coursework, including 36 core courses, 16 electives, and a 16-credit dissertation.

Each Ed.D. student must have a master's degree and a teaching license.

Hamline's Administrative Licensure Program

Hamline University offers a low-residency administrative licensure option for students interested in obtaining licensure as K-12 principals, district superintendents, or special education directors.

All administrative licensure programs require 24 credits of core coursework, plus a minimum 30 hours of practical educational leadership experience in a school or district setting. Each student enrolling in the program needs to have a master's degree, a teaching license, and 3 years or more of teaching experience. Credits earned in the program may be applied toward the completion of an Ed.D. degree at Hamline.
