Computer Science and Software Engineering at a Highly Ranked University

Loyola University Maryland offers exciting, dynamic graduate programs in computer science and software engineering at a school ranked by "US News and World Report" as among the top 10 colleges in the north region. The graduate program at Loyola prepares students for major roles in the information technology world of tomorrow. Loyola offers both a Master of Science (MS) in Computer Science and an MS in Software Engineering.

The Master of Science Computer Science (MSCS) at Loyola University Maryland

The MS in Computer Science opens opportunities for careers in networking, software, and Web development. The curriculum focuses on the practical applications of cutting-edge technology built on a strong theoretical foundation.

Students each complete 10 3-credit courses, 2 of which may be applied to the research, writing, and defense of an original thesis. Student may elect to concentrate in Web development, networking, or software engineering.

The Master of Science in Software Engineering at Loyola University Maryland

The MS in Software Engineering (MSSE) features coursework in software architectures, the software development process, best trade practices, software project planning and estimating, and engineering trade-offs.

The degree requires the completion of 10 3-hour courses, 2 of which may be the research, writing, and defense of an original thesis. A business focus, consisting of 3 courses at the renowned Sellinger School of Business and Management, may be chosen as a concentration of study. The Sellinger School at Loyola University Maryland ranks among the top 20 in the nation.

Ground-breaking Research in Computer Science and Software Engineering at Loyola

Researchers at Loyola University keep pace with the fast-changing fields of software engineering and computer science. Among their lauded accomplishments is the creation of software that helped decode the human genome.

Current topics of study include human detection and tracking for robotic workcell safety, external calibration of cameras and laser sensors, text analysis and matching for information retrieval, optimal strategies for games of chance, and software process analysis.

A Faculty of Leaders

Faculty members at Loyola combine achievement in the real world with research and development in the lab. An example of their commitment is Professor Dawn J. Lawrie who has worked as a software engineer on large-scale projects for industry giant Teradyne. Yet, she is also a noted researcher in information retrieval and document organization. A member of SIGIR, SCAM, and the ICPC, Dr. Lawrie has also served as editor of the IET Software Journal.

Another noted professional is Professor Roger Eastman. Dr. Eastman is co-author of the books, Image Registration for Remote Sensing and Adaptive Mobile Robotics. Professor Eastman's research interests include image registration, digital images, and earth satellite imagery. He collaborates closely with scientists at the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) as well as those at NASA.

Professor David Binkley's research interests are software engineering and testing, semantics-based software engineering tools, program slicing and clustering, and software for safety critical systems. Professor Binkley is author of numerous book chapters and has presented at over 75 conferences in the United States, Canada, Europe and the Far East.

Financial Aid at Loyola University Maryland

Loyola University offers financial aid to graduate students in the form of federal and private subsidized and unsubsidized loans, assistantships, and merit and need-based grants.

A University with a Rich History

Loyola Maryland University (LMU) is a private, Catholic Jesuit university located in Baltimore, Maryland. Established in 1852, it is the 9th oldest Jesuit college in the United States and the first to bear the name of St. Ignatius of Loyola, the founder of the Society of Jesus.

The computer science and software engineering programs are located at the Timonium and Columbia graduate centers, located in the Baltimore suburbs. They also access facilities in the main Evergreen campus.
