Overview

A Highly Ranked Engineering University

Milwaukee School of Engineering (MSOE) is a highly regarded regional university that offers programs in engineering, business, mathematics, and nursing. Both "The Princeton Review" and "U.S. News and World Report" rank MSOE among the best in the Midwest. "Forbes" places MSOE among the top 9% of universities in the nation for engineering programs.

Milwaukee School of Engineering also consistently ranks as a best value on the "U.S. News and World Report" survey of Midwestern universities without Ph.D. programs.

This highly-ranked university offers a Master of Science in Medical Informatics degree program.

The Master's Program in Medical Informatics

Students can work at the intersection of medicine, business, and information technology with MSOE and the Medical College of Wisconsin's joint master's degree in medical informatics.

Medical informatics is the applied science at the junction of the disciplines of medicine, business, and information technology, which supports the health care delivery process and promotes measurable improvements in both quality of care and cost-effectiveness.

The joint master's in medical informatics degree program combines the strength of the Medical College of Wisconsin, a leading provider of medical education and research, and the expertise of MSOE in the disciplines of business and information technology. Faculty members have extensive industry experience, and most have Ph.D. degrees.

Program Details

It is not the goal of the MSMI degree program to comprehensively cross train individuals from one medical informatics domain for another. The program will not make doctors or nurses into network engineers, database designers, or finance or management experts. Rather, the intent is to give graduates the knowledge and skills to identify, recruit, and work with expert resources needed for the successful project. Additionally, with 6 credits of electives and a 6-credit internship/research project, students will have the opportunity to gain additional expertise according to their individual academic and career goals.

MSOE follows an academic quarter system. The 45 quarter credits required in this program equate to approximately 30 semester credits of contact and class time.

The Milwaukee School of Engineering Advantage

Students enrolled in the Master of Science in Medical Informatics degree program at MSOE receive a practical, applied, professional graduate education that allows them to immediately apply new knowledge to work challenges both during the program and at program completion. A longitudinal study of mid-career MSOE graduates shows that they continue to outperform their cohorts in both salary and job satisfaction.

Small class sizes and professor-led classes are another component of the MSOE advantage. Students enjoy great access to professors, allowing for greater feedback and improving students' mastery of core concepts. In addition, the online blended format and tech-savvy faculty members make it easy to communicate with professors via email, Skype, text, and other platforms.

A Business Background in the Classroom

MSOE faculty members have relevant, extensive experience outside the classroom and laboratory, and have often worked in industry for many years before coming to MSOE to teach. Professors share their experience and expertise in the classroom, and also help students apply new learning to address business problems during class-related field projects. The close relationships between MSOE faculty members and regional industry help maintain a current, relevant curriculum, while providing a "living laboratory" in which students apply new skills and knowledge.

In addition to significant industry experience, the majority of MSOE graduate faculty members hold doctoral degrees in specialized fields of study that enhance their ability to share information in the classroom.

A Modern Campus

Milwaukee School of Engineering's 20 acre campus is located in the east shore neighborhood of Milwaukee, Wisconsin, just minutes from Lake Michigan. Campus features include an athletic field and easy-access parking.

"The Princeton Review" has named MSOE as one of the nation's most environmentally friendly colleges. The solar panels atop the Campus Center develop renewable clean energy.

MSOE's graduates enjoy the highest average starting and mid-career salaries of any Wisconsin university according to Payscale Inc. Affordable Colleges Online ranks MSOE in the top 1% of U.S. colleges as measured by return on investment (ROI). MSOE degree-holders out-earn non-degree holders by at least one million dollars.
