The Department of Curriculum, Instruction, and Special Education at Mississippi State University now offers a Master of Arts in Teaching - Secondary Education for distance learning students. This program is designed for those typically seeking to teach at the 7th -12th grade level.
The MAT-S program is a 36-hour program. Half of this program is offered online. Students learn in a challenging online environment paired with field based teaching experience, designed in an effort to shape them into modern educators.
The MAT-S program is a post-baccalaureate for individuals who wish to prepare for careers as professional educators. The MAT-S program of study consists of 36 semester hours of graduate level course work and qualifies individuals for licensure in secondary teaching fields of art, biology, business, chemistry, English, family and consumer sciences, foreign language (French and Spanish), mathematics, music, physical education, physics, or social studies. The curriculum includes courses in classroom management, assessment, technology, curriculum organization, instructional methodology, reading/writing across the curriculum, teaching children with exceptionalities, and a teaching internship. The program is field intensive and grounded in clinical practice carried out in a secondary school setting.
The MAT-S degree is a high quality response to Mississippi's need for strong teachers. Through the program students will be eligible to receive:
- a 3 year Class A non-renewable license after completion of EDS 8243 and EPY 6313
- a 5 year Class A renewable license after receiving a 3 year Class A non-renewable license and completing EDS 8886 or EDS 8896
- a 5 year Class AA renewable license after completion of the MAT-S degree program.
Costs of the MAT-S Program
Tuition is assessed on a per credit hour basis at the prevailing rates as determined by the Institution of Higher Learning, the governing board of the university. In addition, all courses are assessed a per credit hour distance fee. Tuition rates and distance fees are subject to change from semester to semester.
Textbooks are not included in the tuition rates. A student must order textbooks each semester for each course in which he or she is enrolled. Some courses may require additional materials, such as lab manuals. All textbooks are available for online purchase via the Mississippi State University's Barnes & Noble bookstore.
All courses offered in the Master of Arts in Teaching - Secondary Education program are fully accredited through Mississippi State University by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS), as well as by the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE).
For successful completion of the program, it is recommended that students have Internet access via DSL or equivalent broadband connectivity option. Traditional dial-up Internet services do not provide adequate support to the many technologies used within the program.
