The Northeastern Graduate School of Engineering at Northeastern University in Boston, Massachusetts, ranks among the top in the nation, according to "U.S. News and World Report." Its 150 faculty and staff members are internationally recognized for ground-breaking research. The graduate school serves approximately 1,500 students.

The graduate school offers traditional engineering graduate programs in fields like bioengineering, chemical engineering, and computer systems engineering. The school also offers unique graduate programs that are tailored toward emerging job markets. The College of Engineering offers a unique Master of Science (MS) in Energy Systems.

Master of Science in Energy Systems

The MS in Energy Systems at Northeastern University is a unique program that combines the technological and financial planning elements of energy system developments. The interdisciplinary program services both technical business professionals and engineers who are pursuing careers in the field.

Two Tracks

Students have the opportunity to participate in the Northeastern top-ranking educational cooperative education program for a 6 month period. This program is designed for students who choose to focus on the technological aspect of energy systems. A student involved in the program works for a prominent company in the field during the summer and fall of his or her second year.

Students may also opt to complete the non co-op track. This track simply involves 2 years of fall and spring semester coursework.

MS Coursework

Graduate studies in the energy systems program at Northeastern complete 6 core courses that span technology and finance. These include Value Creation Through Financial Decision Making; Financial Reporting and Managerial Decision Making; Economic Decision Making; Fundamentals of Energy System Integration; and Mathematical Methods for Mechanical Engineers.

Students may take elective courses from the College of Business Administration, the College of Engineering, the School of Technology Entrepreneurship, or the College of Science. These electives cover topics such as wind and tidal, photovoltaic, and solar thermal power generation, conservation, and sustainable energy strategies.

Energy Systems Admission Requirements

Individuals who would like to be considered for the Energy Systems master's program at Northeastern should submit GRE scores and have GPAs of 3.0 or higher from accredited engineering schools, or they should have business or financial degrees. They should also have completed college level calculus classes.

An Accomplished Faculty

The faculty members from all 4 different schools work with students in this unique graduate program. The program also relies heavily on interfacing with practicing professionals who participate as invited speakers and adjunct professors.

Professor Gregory Kowalski from the Department of Mechanical and Industrial Engineering serves as the director of the program. Professor Kowalski worked for the Solar Energy Research Institute and the U.S. Army Natick Research, Development and Engineering Center prior to coming to Northeaster.

College of Business Administration

The Princeton Review has given College of Business Administration at Northeastern University a ranking of 14th in the nation for entrepreneurship. Poets & Quants ranks the graduate school among the top 100 business schools in the country. The members of its large, well-recognized faculty have expertise in global management, innovation, corporate governance and topics related to corporate technological development.

The School of Technology Entrepreneurship

The School of Technology Entrepreneurship is the first stand-alone school dedicated to developing the field of technological innovation. The school has been granted funding by the National Collegiate Inventors and Innovative Alliance and the North American Case Research. The school's faculty members have been recognized for their work in advancing technological innovation. Professor Tucker Marion, for example, recently received the Dell Design Educator Award for his work on managing a technology-based business.
