Overview

The ideal foundation for work in family therapy or clinical, counseling, community, or developmental psychology

The Master of Arts in Clinical Psychology with an Emphasis in Marriage and Family Therapy offers an academic and practicum foundation for work in family therapy, or clinical, counseling, community, or developmental psychology. The curriculum is design to meet the academic requirements for the Marriage and Family Therapist (LMFT or LPCC) license in California. As part of the program, students gain supervised counseling experience in approved clinical settings, and each earns a portion of the 3,000 hours of experience required for the MFT license.

Benefits of the Program

This program offers a clinical and practice-based course of study, emphasizing current, applied methods of psychotherapy, within the context of a values-oriented setting. Instruction is based on a variety of theoretical orientations and therapeutic modalities that are practiced regularly in today's mental health marketplace. After completing the prerequisites for practicums, students are assisted in locating appropriate field placements to begin their supervised clinical experience toward MFT license requirements. This program does not require a master's thesis; however, most courses include a formal paper or project and a final examination.

The Master of Arts in Clinical Psychology features both an evening format and a full-time, day format. Evening format is offered at the West Los Angeles, Encino, and Irvine Graduate Campuses, and the daytime format is offered at the Malibu campus. Additionally, Pepperdine offers a Master of Arts in Clinical Psychology with an Emphasis in Marriage and Family Therapy with Latinas/os, available in the evening format. A bachelor's degree in psychology is not required for the program's evening format.

The program meets prerequisite requirements for application to the Doctor of Psychology (PsyD) program at Pepperdine University, although completion of the degree does not guarantee admission to the doctoral program.

Financial aid, career services, and housing assistance are available.

LMFT Practicum Preparation

The LMFT Clinical Training Department serves all students and recent graduates of GSEP's Master of Arts in Clinical Psychology with an Emphasis in Marriage and Family Therapy Program. Services include clinical training information meetings for new LMFT students, practicum students, and recent graduates. These meetings guide students and graduates as they prepare for the practicum experience (Psy 662) and for registration with the state board in California (Board of Behavioral Sciences) which licenses MFTs. The LMFT Clinical Training Department provides students and recent graduates with resources and connections in the LMFT field. Additionally, the department coordinates the practicum experience and classes needed to pass Psy 662.
