The School of Architecture at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute

The School of Architecture at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute fosters creativity, independence, pragmatism, and a strong sense of social responsibility among its graduates. Students have opportunities to explore a range of transdisciplinary areas of graduate study that address current and upcoming social needs through the department's 3 areas of concentration: architectural acoustics, lighting, and built ecologies.

The school uses a fully integrated studio model to incorporate tradition with technology, and encourage student participation in interdisciplinary study and research. Through the studio model, students have access to a digital infrastructure that allows for in depth exploration of complex designs, while simultaneously encouraging critical thinking. Rensselaer students also have access to the university's extensive digital network, which has earned the Institute a spot in "US News & World Report's" 15 Most Wired College Campuses.

State-of-the-Art Research Equipment and Interdisciplinary Research Laboratories

Students in architecture sciences have access to a number of innovative research facilities and specialized equipment designed to support research activity and enhance classroom education. Architectural acoustics students have access to 2 laboratories specific to their discipline. The Communication Acoustics and Aural Architecture Research Laboratory explores human perception of sound in 3 main areas: psychophysics and auditory signal processing, virtual-environment technology, and aural architecture.

Research conducted in the Lab of Acoustics Sensing and Information Processing (LASIP) focuses on the theories and development of acoustic signal processing technologies. Research at LASIP is divided into 4 main areas: advanced architectural acoustics measurement technology, acoustics sensing and detection, Bayesian analysis in architectural acoustics, and signal processing in acoustics.

Facilities in architectural acoustics are comprised of state-of-the-art research stations and equipment, including a binaural listening and auralization test station, advanced acoustics vibration measurement systems, laser Doppler vibrometers, scale-model reverberation and anechoic chambers, and acoustic modeling and computation software.

Master's Degree Available in Architectural Acoustics

Known as the largest and most comprehensive program in its discipline in the nation, the MS program in Architectural Sciences with a concentration in Architectural Acoustics offers students the knowledge and skills needed for advanced practice and applied research.

Many students entering the program have backgrounds in architecture, the arts, engineering, or science. Numerous students are accomplished musicians. The program uses many opportunities in fieldwork to develop student experience of sound environments and reinforce industry relationships. Areas of study include acoustic and vibration measurement techniques, psychoacoustics, room acoustics, and sound reinforcement.

Students pursuing the MS in Architectural Sciences can complete the 30 credit hour program in 1 year. The program is tailored for students interested in acquiring a PhD or for those looking for qualifications in architectural research, advanced consultancy, specialized practices, or university teaching.

Doctoral Degree Available in Architectural Sciences

The School of Architecture offers an interdisciplinary Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Architectural Sciences. Students may choose to concentrate their studies in one of 3 areas: architectural acoustics, built ecologies, and lighting. Through these concentrations, the program covers a wide range of disciplines that affect humans' biological, physical, social, and cultural built environments.

Areas of research in the acoustics doctoral program include acoustic and vibration measurement techniques, noise control, psychoacoustics, room acoustics, and sound reinforcement. Graduate research is supported by a number of federal agencies, including the National Science Foundation (NSF).

PhD graduates typically pursue careers in consulting, research, teaching, or specialized professional practices. Graduates of the program have taken positions in national laboratories and research centers around the world.

Supported by Faculty Members with Extensive Research and Industry Experience

Faculty members from the School of Architecture are known for their achievements in research and their investments in professional and industry development. For instance, Dr. Jonas Braasch is the co-founder and director of Rensselaer's Communication Acoustics and Aural Architecture Research Laboratory. Braasch is a board member of the Deep Listening Institute, and was awarded with the Lothar-Cremer Prize, the highest recognition for young investigators presented by the German Acoustical Society.

Dr. Ning Xiang is the director of Rensselaer's acoustics program. In addition to memberships with several professional associations, Xiang holds fellowships with the Acoustical Society of America and the UK's Institute of Acoustics. Xiang's work in binaural technology, acoustic landmine detection, and automatic target recognition can be seen in over 180 publications, including 24 in 2010 alone.

Rensselaer faculty members are also well-known for successfully transferring technology from the laboratory to the marketplace, and have been instrumental in projects designed to improve acoustical spaces, energy transfer, "auralization," and electrical systems.
