Let's be up front, here: Graduate school is a big investment of your time, your money, and ultimately your life. You'll be spending a year or more in your graduate program, working with the professors in charge and with your associates, visiting the same buildings, the same laboratories, the same libraries. Pursuing a graduate degree requires a high level of dedication and commitment, and it'll almost certainly be somewhat difficult.

That's why you don't want to complicate matters further by attending a graduate school program that doesn't fit you. You want to make absolutely certain that whatever graduate school program you ultimately choose is the best possible option for you.

Umm.... Ok. So how do I do that?
How do you make certain that you're heading into the graduate school program that will serve you and your goals best, without driving you crazy?

There's no easy answer here, but we've got the tips and tools you can use to make the process as smooth as possible. Here are some basic principles to keep in mind when looking for the right graduate school.

  1. Graduate school rankings aren't everything, but they shouldn't be overlooked.

Grad school rankings are broken up according to the type of grad school, and a law school can't really be compared to a medical school.

But even within each subject, grad school rankings will almost inherently simplify each school to a few important traits, and won't take into account everything that matters. There's more about how graduate school rankings should relate to your graduate school search elsewhere on this site.

  2. Keep in mind factors that will directly affect your life outside of graduate school, such as tuition costs and where you'll have to relocate in order to attend graduate school.

  3. Make sure that the place you choose to go is somewhere you could see yourself for an extended period of time. We might be talking 5 years or more, here.

  4. Consider what you're hoping to do after you get your graduate level degree.

Many graduate programs are better suited for some actual career pursuit, and you'd do well to find one that fits your own aspirations.

  5. Think about other opportunities that might be available to you.

Look at both the program you're choosing and the location you'd study from. If a grad program is in a city, there might be more for you to do, but if you're going to go study at a rural university, then there might be fewer opportunities for you if you're studying architecture or urban planning, for example.

There's more to it, of course, and if you want more in-depth treatments on topics like how best to use graduate school rankings to figure out what grad school is right for you, then you should read on at the other articles here. With our help, you'll be able to find just the right place for you.
