Overview

Kansas State University

Founded in 1863 as America's first operational land-grant university, Kansas State University is a comprehensive research institution with master's, doctoral and certificate programs. Students representing 85 countries from around the world come to K-State to study a wide range of graduate programs, which includes several interdisciplinary programs.

With the goal of becoming a Top 50 public research university by 2025, K-State celebrates a tradition of success and looks ahead to new opportunities. K-State is dedicated to advancing a culture of excellence that will attract highly talented, diverse graduate students and producing graduates who are recognized as outstanding in their respective professions.

Graduate Programs

K-State offers 70 master's, 38 doctoral, 4 education doctoral and 36 certificate programs that prepare students for a variety of scholarly, research and professional careers. In addition to offering traditional on-campus courses and degree programs, the Division of Continuing Education also offers many courses and degree programs via distance education.

Since research is the mode of learning at the limits of knowledge, a common objective of all graduate programs at K-State is to develop the capacities needed for independent study and research. All doctoral and most master's programs develop such capacities through both advanced course work and original research under the direction of faculty members who are experts in their fields. A crucial part of this process involves the preparation and publication of a research study in the form of a thesis or dissertation and a defense of the study before the faculty. Some professional master's programs emphasize preparation for professional practice and, thus, offer a nonthesis option.

Research Facilities

K-State respects and admires the enthusiastic scholarship that graduate students bring to the university. Students perform research alongside faculty in leading facilities. A vast library network houses more than 2 million books and provides online access to more than 49,000 journals, databases and books. Graduate students at K-State also have access to unique facilities and resources that provide dynamic training experiences. The Sensory and Consumer Research Center provides students with the opportunity to perform qualitative and quantitative consumer research. Atomic, molecular and optical physics students work with ultrafast intense lasers in the James R. Macdonald Lab. The Wheat Genetics Resource Center features state-of-the-art laboratories, greenhouses and field plot facilities. More than 75 additional specialized research centers unite researchers across disciplines and drive innovative research and discoveries.

Funding and Financial Assistance

Graduate assistantships, fellowships, scholarships and loans are available to graduate students, with over half of K-State graduate students receiving some type of financial assistance. On average, graduate students awarded financial assistance receive more than $10,000 per academic year.

Most programs offer graduate teaching or research assistantships. Graduate teaching assistants who receive at least a half-time appointment are given full-tuition waivers. Graduate research assistants are eligible for tuition reductions. Many fellowships and scholarships for graduate study are available through individual colleges and departments. Students should contact the program they are interested in for more information.

Questions about federal assistance programs, work-study programs and loans should be directed to the Office of Student Financial Assistance.

Student Life

Although graduate studies are intense and time consuming, many graduate students find time to get involved with various groups and organizations on campus. K-State graduate students are encouraged to become involved with Graduate Student Council (GSC), the student governing board for graduate students. GSC provides students with professional development, networking and leadership opportunities. GSC awards students travel grants to present their research and scholarly work at professional meetings and to attend conferences. Students also enjoy other activities around campus, such as university sporting events, art exhibits at the Beach Art Museum, fitness facilities at the Recreational Complex and much more.

About Manhattan

K-State's main campus is located in Manhattan, Kansas. Known as "The Little Apple," Manhattan is a classic college town with more than 52,000 residents. While Manhattan offers many urban amenities, it still has all of the charm of a small town. Men's Journal named Manhattan one of the 50 best places in the nation to live.

A variety of single student and family housing options exist both on- and off-campus. Manhattan features several public and private elementary, middle and high schools. On-campus day care is also available.

Manhattan offers a variety of attractions--from arts and entertainment to outdoor recreation. Whether you're shopping downtown Manhattan, exploring the Flint Hills Discovery Center, taking in a show at McCain Auditorium or hiking the Konza Prairie, there's always something to do in Manhattan.

The university also has campuses in Salina and Olathe, Kansas.
