The Doctor of Philosophy in Engineering with a Concentration in Industrial Engineering

The Department of Industrial & Systems Engineering offers distance students the opportunity to earn Doctor of Philosophy in Engineering degrees with concentrations in Industrial Engineering. The PhD program is designed to prepare individuals for advanced industrial and systems engineering practice, research, and teaching.

All of the following examinations will be required of those seeking to earn PhDs in Engineering - Industrial Engineering:

- Qualifying Examination: A qualifying examination must be taken by the student before he/she has completed twelve hours of course work for graduate credit.

- Preliminary Examination: When the student has completed his or her course work and has his or her dissertation topic approved, he or she must pass a preliminary examination. This examination will be both written and oral and is designed to determine the student's ability to perform scholarly work in industrial and systems engineering.

- Oral Examination: Upon completion of the dissertation and its review by the committee, the final oral examination is held. The examination is essentially restricted to defense of the dissertation, but the student must expect and be able to answer questions that test his or her fitness to do research in the area of the dissertation.
