Established in 1851, the university offers programs for working adults to complete their bachelor's degrees, master's degrees, or credentials in the evening, as well as a full-time day undergraduate program.

School of Education and Leadership Graduate Degree Program Overview

Graduate degree programs in the Notre Dame de Namur School of Education and Leadership are recognized for their excellence in teacher education and credentialization, personalized instruction that supports students' specific professional goals, field orientation of programs, and successful placement of graduates. Faculty members are instructors, advisers, and mentors who work closely with students for the duration of their NDNU studies.

The following graduate degrees are offered: Master of Arts in Education (MAEd) with concentrations in curriculum and instruction, education technology, and disciplinary studies; Master of Arts in Special Education (MA); and Master of Arts in School Administration (MA). Notre Dame de Namur University now offers an add-on teaching authorization for teaching students with autism spectrum disorders (ASD) that can be added to an existing special education teaching credential or on to any base credential.

Master of Arts in Education

The Master of Arts in Education degree program offers students a selection of 3 areas of emphasis on which to focus their studies: "Curriculum and Instruction," "Educational Technology," and "Disciplinary Studies." Each concentration includes a specific complement of courses.

The "Curriculum and Instruction" concentration builds the capacity of educators to promote social justice in the context of their schools and communities through better teaching practices, curriculum development and assessment, program planning, research, and educational leadership. The program culminates in a master's thesis, allowing each student the opportunity to investigate a particular area of curriculum and instruction in depth.

The technology concentration prepares educators to serve as school and district-level educational technology leaders. Graduates of the program may work with the credential analyst in the School of Education and Leadership to apply for a supplementary authorization on their multiple subject or single subject teaching credential in order to teach computer science. The master's thesis for the technology concentration allows students the opportunity to investigate particular areas of education technology in depth.

The "Disciplinary Studies" concentration broadens and deepens the knowledge and skills of secondary-school educators in 1 subject area. A multiple-subject credential holder may also consider pursuing a degree in 1 of these concentration areas if he or she is interested in developing subject-matter knowledge for the elementary classroom, or to prepare for the subject-matter examinations required for the secondary credential.

Master of Arts in Special Education

The Master of Arts in Special Education degree program prepares students to teach in special education environments in public and private schools. The degree builds upon the Education Specialist Credential, enabling students to complete additional coursework and capstone projects to earn Master of Arts degrees in addition to the credentials.

A program plan is coordinated for every student by the program director. Mild/Moderate credential holders are able to teach students in Resource Specialist Program classes (K-12) and students in special day classes for learning disabilities. Moderate/Severe credential holders are able to teach students in grades K-12 whose needs are more severe. Candidates may be hired by school districts to serve as paid interns while earning the credential.

In addition to course work, a capstone project in the form of a practitioner researcher portfolio is required to complete the MA program in Special Education.

Master of Arts in School Administration

The Master of Arts in School Administration degree is offered in conjunction with the Preliminary Administrative Services Credential program. It prepares students to serve as administrators (in roles such as superintendent, deputy superintendent, associate superintendent, assistant superintendent, principal, assistant principal, supervisor, consultant, coordinator, or an equivalent intermediate-level administrative position) in public and private schools and districts.

The program includes courses that address the critical connection between theory and practice in instructional leadership.

University instructors as well as field-based partners in schools and districts support degree candidates during the program. The usual time between a student's first and last courses is 2 years.

Faculty members and graduate students are involved in a variety of collaborative research experiences ranging from more basic research to research that is applied to school settings.

Notable faculty members include Dr. Annabel Lee Jensen, Department of Education Chair at NDNU and a pioneer in the field of emotional intelligence education. She has co-authored 4 books on teaching emotional intelligence, written numerous articles, and trained over 10,000 educators and leaders around the globe.
