The Graduate School of Humanities and Social Sciences is located at the heart of the University of Melbourne's Parkville campus. Executive Master of Arts Program
The University of Melbourne offers Australia's first Executive Master of the Arts (EMA) program. The EMA program combines previous discipline-specific knowledge with strategic and professional skills. Courses combine traditional Arts strengths in analysis, critical reasoning, and ethics with proficiencies in planning projects, managing resources, and delivering results within an ever-changing workplace.
The program consists of three learning modules: the Professional Skills Module, Discipline Module, and Applied Module. The Applied Module provides students with opportunities for internships and group projects with leading organizations in Australia's business, government, and community sectors.
Master of Applied Linguistics
The only Applied Linguistics program to receive a rank of 5 by the 2010 Excellence in Research Australia ranking; the Master of Applied Linguistics at the University of Melbourne is the top Linguistics program in Australia. The Academic staff, edit and publish prolifically, serve on international boards and attract large grants to support research. Students can specialize in English Language, Language Testing, TESOL, and Technology and Language Learning.
Students can complete the program entirely online or through a combination of online and afternoon classes. Students can choose between a part-time and full-time schedule.
Master of International Relations
The Master of International Relations at The University of Melbourne is a multidisciplinary and professionally-oriented program that equips students for professions in government, the NGO sector, the private sector, and academia. The program focuses on international relations theory, international political economy, international governance and law, international security, and international history; carefully examining nuclear weapons, the politics of climate change, human rights and other critical challenges in today's international arena. Drawing on the expertise of regional specialists, students can choose to focus on the International Relations of the Asia-Pacific, Europe, or the Middle East.
The program also offers internships with government, international organizations, NGOs, business, and the media.
Master of Global Media Communication
The Master of Global Media Communication prepares students for a broad range of careers, in media and communications to corporate, government, and NGO professions requiring expertise in media strategy and knowledge of media platforms.
Students can focus on developing concrete skills in specific areas such as public relations and communications advocacy, media writing and audiovisual media production.
Students can complete an internship to gain job experience or complete a thesis that can provide a pathway to PhD study.
Master of Creative Writing, Publishing and Editing
The Master of Creative Writing, Publishing and Editing at the University of Melbourne is internationally recognized as one of the most progressive and exciting programs of its kind. Academic staff maintain a strong commitment to scholarly values, and actively encourage and support students in their passion for literature and writing.
Creative writing students make important contributions to the publication of School journals and actively participate in seminar programs designed to foster creative and critical debate. Academic staff are experienced and widely published writers in their own fields and offer subjects and supervision in the areas of fiction, poetry, poetics, nonfiction, screenwriting, forms of autobiography, and theatre writing.

The Graduate School of Humanities and Social Sciences offers Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) and Masters by Research (MA) degrees in the fields of Asian Studies, Culture and Communication, Historical and Philosophical Studies, Language and Linguistics, and Social and Political Studies.
The Doctor of Philosophy (PhD or Doctorate) is the highest degree offered by the University. It is a sustained piece of independent research and writing that examines a specific problem, issue or topic and, upon completion, makes a significant and new contribution to existing knowledge. The PhD is typically completed within three years (full-time) and culminates in an 80 000 word thesis.
The Masters by Research (MA) provides students with an opportunity to carry out sustained and independent research. It is usually completed with 18 months full time. Within the Masters by Research program, students can elect either to complete a thesis only or advanced seminar and a shorter thesis, which combines both research and coursework.
