Distance Learning Center for Graduate Students

The Center for Distance Education (CDE) at Upper Iowa University (UIU) offers online graduate programs and independent studies to students across the globe. Students complete master's degrees through one of the university's 20 locations without any residency requirements, and on their own schedules. These programs are supported by dedicated faculty members of Upper Iowa University, all of whom are successful and knowledgeable experts in their given fields.

The online program offers students opportunities for 3 master's degrees. UIU's transfer policy also allows students the opportunity to transfer up to 12 credit hours when entering their master's programs.

UIU is nationally recognized for their achievements in distance education. UIU has been ranked in the top 5 online degree-granting universities by Online Education Database (OEDB), and several of their online master's programs have been recognized as "Best Buys" by GetEducated.com. The flexibility and convenience of these programs is popular among students, such as military personnel or non-traditional aged students, who are unable to participate in traditional college classes.

Master's Degree Programs Available through Distance Learning

The CDE offers 3 graduate degrees in 14 areas of emphasis that can be completed through a combination of on campus and online classes. Each program is designed to allow students to enhance their learning by actively and substantively participating in class discussions.

Through these programs, students complete course schedules that allow for a unique balance of learning. Students enroll for 2 full-credit courses at a time for an 8-week term. With 2 summer terms, students have the opportunity to complete 6 sets of courses in a year.

Master of Business Administration Program

UIU offers the Master of Business Administration (MBA) through its online program, and on campus at the Madison, Wisconsin center. The program uses individual and group assignments to develop student skills in qualitative and quantitative problem solving. Students address issues related to current theories, concepts, and real-world case studies to strengthen managerial skill and expertise.

Students in the MBA program choose among 6 complementary, but distinct, areas of emphasis: accounting, corporate financial management, global business, human resources management, organizational development, and quality management. Each area of study culminates in an MBA capstone course for a total of 39 credit hours.

Master of Higher Education Administration Program

UIU offers Master of Higher Education Administration (MHEA) degrees through its online program or on campus at the Fayette location. The MHEA program is designed to provide students interested in pursuing careers as educational administrators with the skills and experience they need to succeed. Students have ample opportunity to combine traditional classroom theory with real-world examples and experience. Courses incorporate individual and group assignments in activities like case studies, simulation exercises, and field interviews.

Students completing MHEA degrees choose from 2 areas of emphasis to focus their studies: leadership or community and technical college administration. MHEA students complete capstone research seminars for a total of 39 credit hours before graduating.

Master of Pubic Administration Program

The CDE offers a Master of Pubic Administration (MPA) program for students interested in pursuing leadership roles in government and nonprofit organizations. The online program provides students with a quality education regardless of physical location or learning style. The MPA program uses students' existing skills in communication, problem solving, and research to emphasize the complex connections between public administration theory and practice. MPA graduates are qualified to promote the public good through positions in government agencies and national and local nonprofit organizations.

MPA students can choose between 6 areas of emphasis to develop their administrative, leadership, and management skills: general study, government administration, health and human services, justice and homeland security, nonprofit organizations, and public personnel management.

Financial Aid Opportunities

Graduates of Upper Iowa University have less debt on average than graduates of any other private university in Iowa, in large part because of the "aggressive approach" the UIU financial aid office takes toward financial assistance. The university works with distance learning students and non-traditional students to provide financial assistance to all graduate students eligible for Federal Stafford Loans. UIU also offers 3 scholarships for academic extension students, and a number of major-specific, regional, and general scholarships.

Graduate students in the accounting program may apply for one of 10 John L. Carey Scholarships. Iowa residents may also be eligible for Iowa Tuition Grants, which provide the difference between UIU tuition and the average tuition at the Regent universities. Students who qualify for UIU's distance education program may also be eligible to receive veterans' benefits.
