Overview

Students Flourish at Assumption University

Established in 1904 by the Augustinians of the Assumption, Assumption University is a Catholic, coeducational institution known for its classic liberal arts curriculum and strong academic programs in business and professional studies. Nearly 2,000 undergraduates choose among 35 majors and 49 minors (with new programs in nursing, neuroscience, and cybersecurity), gaining the depth and breadth of knowledge that is the foundation of lifelong success.

Assumption students, who hail from 30 states and 14 countries, enjoy a warm, collegial environment where they receive individualized attention and are part of a supportive community.

Assumption Receives National Recognition as an Academic Institution of Excellence

Assumption's diverse curriculum is infused with the rich Catholic intellectual tradition. The school's Catholic identity creates a distinct culture that allows it to stand out among the nation's premier academic institutions.

The University is nationally recognized as an excellent choice for higher education. The Princeton Review lists Assumption as "one of the best colleges in the nation" and U.S. News and World Report: Best Colleges ranked it among the best masters-level colleges in the North. In the most recent National Survey of Student Engagement report, Assumption students and alumni gave their experience at the University higher marks than students surveyed at other private, four-year colleges.

Worcester, Massachusetts, Provides Abundant Internships and Opportunities

Assumption's 185-acre campus is situated in a beautiful residential neighborhood minutes from downtown Worcester, Massachusetts, the second-largest city in New England. Both Boston and Providence are only an hour's drive away, with numerous transportation options available.

Worcester is home to 12 colleges and universities, as well as a variety of restaurants, cultural, retail and entertainment options, and professional sports teams, providing excellent options for off-campus activities.

Assumption's location also offers a broad choice of internship opportunities. Eighty-four percent of 2020 participated in research, internships, service learning and/or student teaching opportunities.

Students Learn to Find Their Own Answers Alongside Experienced Faculty Members

At Assumption, students receive a top-notch education that combines faculty expertise with hands-on learning and is supported by a small student-faculty ratio of 12:1 with 100% of classes taught by professors (not teaching assistants). Professors get to know their students and are committed to helping them succeed and achieve their academic and professional goals.

Assumption's faculty are active scholars who love teaching, and who challenge students to make their own discoveries. The faculty members, 92 percent of whom hold the highest degree available in their field, also serve as mentors and academic advisors.

Several University programs focus on fostering this special teacher-student bond. Our first-year program, called COMPASS (Common Pursuit of Academic and Social Success), groups students into 22-person learning communities, chosen according to their interests. Together, each community takes two courses together. By taking these first steps together, students form strong bonds, reinforce one other's academic accomplishments, and are more comfortable engaging in the classroom. The SOPHIA program (Sophomore Initiative at Assumption University) is specially designed to help students discover a deeper connection between their spiritual, personal and professional lives by combining residential, academic and travel opportunities under the guidance of four dedicated faculty mentors.

Academic Options Help Assumption Students Excel

Assumption's co curricular opportunities and study abroad programs give students the chance to expand their horizons and branch out beyond the classroom.

Special academic programs such as the University’s Honors Program allow students to feed their intellectual curiosity and hone their analytical skills through focused learning and independent study.

In order to provide our students with even more academic options, Assumption University has developed partnerships with a number of other nationally recognized colleges and universities. Engineering agreements with University of Notre Dame and Washington University in St. Louis; law school partnerships with Duquesne University School of Law, University of St. Thomas School of Law, Vermont Law School, Western New England University School of Law; and environmental programs with Duke University Nicholas School are just a few of the many options available to students.

Assumption students are encouraged to learn about other cultures and become true citizens of the world through our robust study abroad program. The University has opened a campus in the heart of Rome, Italy, where onsite Assumption faculty utilize the city as a "living classroom". Other study abroad offerings include highly regarded programs at sites like: Sydney, Madrid, Barcelona, Florence, London, Paris, Dublin, Costa Rica, Washington D.C. and the Semester at Sea program.

Clubs and Organizations Make Student Life Robust and Active

When students are not studying, they can take part in the more than 60 student-run clubs and organizations Assumption offers, ensuring a well-rounded and engaged college experience. Among the most popular student organizations are the Assumption Chorale, Student Government Association, Le Provocateur (the student-run newspaper), Drama Club, Campus Ministry, and club sports and intramural teams. An active campus life within a supportive community is one of the hallmarks of an Assumption education, and contributes to a diverse, dynamic experience.
