Innovation and Discovery at Purdue

Purdue University has a reputation for innovation and discovery built on a foundation of tradition and history. Founded as a land-grant school in 1869, today the University is known for scholarly excellence, research, and achievement in the thirteen Colleges and Schools dedicated to preparing students for a competitive job market.

The Patti and Rusty Rueff School of Design, Art and Performance

The Patti and Rusty Rueff School of Design, Art and Performance is a school within the College of Liberal Arts. VPA has two departments: Art and Design and Theatre, and two divisions: Dance and Music.

The mission of the Department of Art and Design is to provide excellence in undergraduate and graduate education. The Art and Design students have opportunities to work with internationally recognized faculty in state-of-the-art facilities with some of the best technology available for the making, studying, and teaching of the visual arts. The Department of Art and Design, accredited by the National Association of Schools of Art and Design (NASAD), offers the BFA, MA, MFA, and PhD degrees. Our undergraduate concentrations, majors, and minors include the following: Art Education, Art History, Integrated Studio Arts, Industrial Design, Interior Design, Studio Arts & Technology, and Visual Communications Design. The Art and Design Department has been ranked #39 as one of the best arts schools in the United States.

Art Education

Students in the Art Education program develop a broad understanding of the visual arts, and the ability to communicate this knowledge to others through teaching. The program provides a solid foundation in the liberal arts as well as specialized skills in studio arts, curriculum planning, teaching strategies, assessment of learning, and verbal communication.

The art education degree meets both state and national certification standards and is accredited by four national accrediting agencies. Degrees Offered: Bachelor of Arts (B.A.), Master of Arts (M.A.), Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) offered in conjunction with the School of Education.

Art History

In Art History we seek to understand the cultural values expressed in a work of art, from the prehistoric period to the present day, and to show how the latter fits into a larger context or tradition to which individual artists belong. The result is that a painting, statue, building, or piece of jewelry comes to life and gives us a fresh insight into mankind’s ever-changing experience and ways of seeing the world. Through their study of the history of art, students learn to develop critical thinking, do research, apply digital tools, and express themselves effectively in written and oral form. They also have the opportunity to work with objects and organize exhibitions. A Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) is offered.

Industrial and Interaction Design

Industrial and Interaction Design is a strategic problem-solving process applicable to products, systems, services, and experiences which results in innovation, business success and a better quality of life. Students build their skills of form-giving, sketching, ideation, prototyping, modeling, and research during the learning process, resulting in diverse design experiences. Industrial design offers a BFA and two MFA degrees with intensive course work to prepare students for professional design positions. The Industrial Design MFA combines the pursuit of extraordinary design and making skills with the knowledge, theories, and methods essential to developing innovation for products and creating new business opportunities. The Interaction Design MFA teaches students to cross boundaries and develop new approaches to explore the interaction possibilities in the context of industrial design. The Industrial Design degree is ranked #11 in the top 30 undergraduate programs.

Interior Design

The Interior Design program (INTD) develops designers who can formulate, communicate, and execute evidence-based design solutions for the physical, social, and psychological needs of society. Students acquire a background in understanding the design process, from research and analysis of the client's goals and requirements, to the formulation of preliminary space plans and two- and three-dimensional design concept studies and sketches that integrate the client's program needs and are based on knowledge of the principles of interior design and theories of human behavior. The undergraduate program is CIDA (Council for Interior Design Accreditation) accredited. A Bachelor of Fine Arts (B.F.A.) and Master of Fine Arts (M.F.A) is offered.

Studio Arts

The Studio Arts area offered a Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA) in Integrated Studio Arts (ISA) and a Master in Studio Arts (MFA). The BFA in Integrated Studio Arts (ISA) program provides a multidisciplinary foundation of conceptual and technical skills in art and emphasizes self-exploration and expression in a variety of visual forms. The three areas of concentration for undergraduate majors are: 2D Extended Media (Painting, Printmaking, Drawing), Craft/Material Studies (Ceramics, Metals and Jewelry, Sculpture, Textiles), and Art, Culture and Technology (ACT) (Electronic & Time-Based Media and Photography and Related Media). Under the mentorship of actively engaged artist/educators, the Master in Studio Arts (MFA) degree program develops and prepares students for professional competency in the creation of works of art, in the application of art, in the transmission of knowledge of art, and in the roles and responsibilities of artists and designers in society. Studio Arts Disciplines: Ceramics, Drawing, Electronic and Time-Based Art, Jewelry and Metalsmithing, Painting, Photography and Related Media, Printmaking, Sculpture, and Textiles.

Studio Arts and Technology

The BA in Studio Arts and Technology degree builds on Purdue’s reputation as a leader in technology and its emerging voice as an innovator in the Arts. Students entering the program will become well versed in their chosen discipline and explore the creative, critical and expressive potential of new media technologies, as they select courses and design their own program.

Visual Communications Design

The Purdue University Visual Communications Design program (VCD) develops students as problem seekers and solvers with the capability to plan communication strategies and form effective visual products. Students are prepared for a profession that is evolving rapidly by mastering the technical and conceptual skills involved in typography, graphic design, new media, web design, packaging, poster design, branding as well as to conducting research, articulating and presenting ideas, and critically evaluating the form making process. A Bachelor of Fine Arts (B.F.A.) and Master of Fine Arts (M.F.A) is offered. Purdue Visual Communications Design is ranked #19 in the top 20 Best Visual Communications Degree Programs.
