The MSM-Finance degree program at the Weatherhead School of Management

The Master of Science in Management-Finance (MSM-Finance) degree program at Case Western Reserve University can be completed in two semesters (nine months). Administered through the Weatherhead School of Management, this distinctive and flexible program allows students to create individualized plans of study and pursue their degrees at their own pace.

The program's focus on financial theory ensures that students graduate with a solid foundation in finance as well as in-depth knowledge corporate finance, corporate consulting, financial modeling, risk management and valuation.

The MSM-Finance degree program curriculum

The 30-credit hour MSM-Finance curriculum consists of 18 credit hours of required and core courses and 12 credit hours of elective courses. Core courses are completed in the fall semester and elective courses are taken in the spring semester.

In addition to the basic curriculum, students can pursue the corporate finance or risk management track, which involves 9 to 12 additional credit hours of elective courses. They can also take specialized electives in health finance and entrepreneurial finance as well as courses in other departments. Additionally, they can complete capstone courses in corporate finance or risk management and summer internships.

Required and core courses

Before the first semester, students complete a "Financial Orientation" course that covers fundamentals in financial accounting, financial management and statistics. Then they take six core courses including "Financial Modeling," "Fundamental Analysis of Companies and Industries," and "Investment Management." "Derivatives and Risk Management;" "Empirical Finance;" and "Individual, Team, and Career Development" are also core courses.

Specialization courses

Students in the corporate finance track can choose from the following elective courses: "Financial Strategy and Value Creation" and "Corporate Risk Management." "Advanced Corporate Finance," "Mergers and Acquisitions," and "International Financial Management" are also courses in this track.

Students in the risk management track choose from among four courses: "Fixed Income Markets and Their Derivatives," "Corporate Risk Management," "Quantitative Risk Modeling," and "International Financial Management."

MSM-Finance dual degree program options

The Weatherhead School of Management also offers two dual degree programs: the MSM-Finance / Master of Business Administration (MBA) degree program and the MSM-Finance / Tongji MBA degree program.

The MSM-Finance / MBA degree program helps students develop the management skills to create long-term value for businesses and society. It also prepares them for successful careers in corporate consulting, corporate finance, equity research, investment banking, investment management and risk management.

Offered through Tongji University in Shanghai, China and Case Western Reserve University, the MSM-Finance / Tongji MBA degree program enables students to strengthen their managerial skills and acquire extensive knowledge of capital markets, corporate finance and risk management on a global scale.

For example, Professor Anurag Gupta, PhD, develops models used to examine fixed income derivatives, researches the impact of illiquidity on financial markets, and studies the relationship between credit risk and liquidity risk. He has authored book chapters and journal articles on these topics.

Professor Scott Fine, MBA, focuses his research on creating classroom materials about valuation and the link between financial and corporate strategy. In addition to his academic work, his career includes positions as a chief financial officer, private equity business owner, and strategic consultant as well as an investment banker.
