Master of Business Administration Program at Iowa State University

Whether students want to complement their science or technical backgrounds, transition into new careers, or advance their business careers, a Master of Business Administration (MBA) degree from Iowa State University will help them accomplish their goals. Its two-year full-time MBA and Professional MBA programs are delivered in a supportive and rewarding environment that includes:

All MBA students are assigned to teams at the start of the program. With the help of faculty advisers, teams work together throughout the core curriculum. Upon completion of core courses, they will have strengthened their teamwork skills and can immediately apply them to the workplace.

Full-time MBA

The Full-time MBA is a two-year, intensive program that consists of 10 core courses (30 credits) and six electives (18 credits). It provides a comprehensive management education and gives students the opportunity to create customized programs of study. The core curriculum, which is delivered sequentially, builds a solid foundation for advanced study in business.

Professional MBA

The Professional MBA is a part-time program that consists of the same team-based, cohort curriculum and is taught by the same faculty as the full-time MBA. Classes are held two nights per week at the Iowa State University's facilities in downtown Des Moines, Iowa. Students can choose the fast track option that allows them to earn their MBA degree in two years.

MBA Specializations

Elective courses provide the option to complete a specialization or general management coursework. MBA specializations are offered in the following areas:

- The MBA accounting specialization equips students with the accounting expertise to work effectively in a technology-driven, global economy.

- The MBA finance specialization provides students with knowledge about the theoretical and practical aspects of investment strategies and corporate financial management.

- The MBA marketing specialization helps students acquire the analytical skills and knowledge about consumer behavior and markets to make smart marketing decisions.

- The MBA supply chain management specialization focuses on the integration of global information and processes across all business functions including information technology, logistics, operations, and supply management.

- The MBA technology and innovation management specialization examines issues pertaining to developing and managing information technologies and managing the commercialization of new technologies.

MBA Core Faculty Team

Faculty members in the College of Business are dedicated, approachable, and responsive scholars who have expertise in many areas of business.

They conduct research on numerous topics such as international entrepreneurship, new venture growth, organizational behavior, and strategic leadership. They also have industry experience in operational areas like accounting, finance, management, and marketing.  

Dr. Brown is a Kingland MBA Professor and conducts research in several areas of finance including financing R&D and innovation, law and finance, and entrepreneurial finance. His research has been published in the "Journal of Financial Intermediation," "Journal of Banking and Finance," "Journal of Entrepreneurial Finance," and other journals. He has received awards for excellence in teaching and research including the 2016 MBA Executive Advisory Council Teaching Excellence Award.

Dr. Brad Shrader brings expertise in the fields of strategic management, corporate governance, business ethics, competitive strategy, and management consulting. Dr. Shrader has published articles in professional journals as well as case studies and book chapters in his fields of expertise. He received the Morrill Professorship award for his professional work and has demonstrated outstanding success in teaching and learning in undergraduate and graduate programs which is reflected by national and international reputation in his discipline. .

Dr. Sam DeMarie researches and publishes articles exploring the impact of new technologies on competitive strategies, corporate change initiatives, and virtual teamwork. He teaches the capstone strategy course in the MBA core curriculum, which includes a team-based case competition that all full-time MBA students participate in. Dr. DeMarie has received numerous awards, including the ISU College of Business Dean’s Advisory Council Business Impact Award and Graduate Teaching Award.

Case competition success

Students in the full-time MBA program participate in a team-based case competition after they complete the core curriculum. The event allows them to apply what they've learned to a real-word scenario. The top performing teams receive scholarships.

Teams of full-time MBA students also participate in case competitions that are held throughout the United States. Iowa State MBAs have consistently placed within the top teams and won awards for their performance.

Great employment outlook for Iowa State MBA graduates

Most MBA graduates at Iowa State University obtain rewarding positions within three months of graduation. Employment statistics for full-time MBA graduates from June 2015 through June 2016 showed that 91% of graduates had accepted offers within three months after graduating.

The percentages of graduates who accepted new employment by business function are 19.2% in consulting, 15.4% in finance/accounting, 19.2% in general management, 11.5% in operations/logistics, and 34.6% in other functional areas. The median base salaries for graduates who accepted new employment per industry were $73,000 for consulting, $64,220 for financial services, $60,000 for manufacturing, and $72,430 for technology.

Employment data also shows that Iowa State MBA graduates secured jobs at Fortune 500 companies like Cargill, Deloitte, Ernst & Young LLP, IBM Corporation, Lockheed Martin, Microsoft, and PricewaterhouseCoopers.
