Salisbury University's Online M.S. in GIS Management

Salisbury University, A Maryland University of National Distinction, offers a Master of Science (M.S.) degree in Geographic Information Systems Management. In an effort to meet a critical need in the U.S. economy for expertise in Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and their deployment in both the private and public sectors, the Department of Geography and Geosciences developed this unique program that provides students with hands-on experience both with this cutting-edge technology and with the administration of GIS technology. The program is designed for non-profit, government, and business managers who are expecting to or are currently responsible for a GIS department, for GIS professionals who seek to shift into managerial positions, and for working professionals who would like to gain expertise in this fast-growing industry. The SU M.S. in GIS Management degree program is the only online program offered in the United States that specializes in GIS administration. Graduates of this program qualify for the education component of their certification as a Geographic Information Systems Professionals (GISPs). Students can choose to complete a full-time option within 1 year or pursue a part-time schedule that accommodates working professionals.

The M.S. in GIS Management Degree Program To Meet the Growing Need

SU launched the master's degree program in recognition of the increasing importance of GIS technology in well-informed decision-making about policies and the allocation of scarce government, business and non-profit resources. Public and private sector organizations are integrating GIS technology to support activities such as fire protection, transportation and logistics, land use, public health, and marketing. The demand for experienced GIS professionals in both technical and management positions has skyrocketed in recent years.

A Schedule Designed for Working Professionals

The master's degree program in GIS management is designed for working professionals. Full-time students complete the degree in 13 months of study, part-time students complete one class at a time over a 25 month period. All courses are offered online only.

The M.S. in GIS Management Degree Program Curriculum

The degree curriculum provides graduates with both hands-on experience working with GIS software and the managerial knowledge that enables them to make use of GIS software to benefit organizations. In addition to the 2 in-residence courses students take during the summer, students complete the following required courses: "Advanced Geographic Information Science," "Organizational Behavior," "Database Processing and Management;" "Managing GISystems;" "GISystems and Public Administration;" "GISystems Co-operative Experience;" and "Capstone GISystems Seminar." Students choose 3 electives as well that best suit their career goals. These electives include "Leadership in GIS Organizations;" "Project Management;" "Principles of Technology Management;" "Strategic Management of Technology and Innovation;" "Economics and Financial Analysis for Technology Managers;" "Organizational Performance Management;" and "Managing People in Technology-based Organizations." Some of the electives are offered at the University of Maryland, University College.

Graduates of the M.S. in Geographic Information System Management degree program at Salisbury University have found jobs with businesses, non-profits, and governmental organizations including ICF International, Inc., Greenehorne and O'Mara, Inc., Analytical Graphics, Inc., Maryland Coastal Bays Program, Maryland Department of Business and Economic Development, Clay County (FL) Government, Geographic Information Services, Inc., Talbot County (MD) Government, the U.S. Coast Guard , and Vision Systems and Technology, Inc.

The M.S. in GIS Management Degree Program Benefits

Salisbury University is well-known for its top-rate GIS undergraduate program, provided by the Department of Geography and Geoscience. The department is collaborates with faculty from other areas on campus and entities including the Business, Economic and Community Outreach Network (BEACON) at SU and the Eastern Shore Regional GIS Cooperative (ESRGC) at SU, among others. The ESRGC employs both graduate and undergraduate students on its projects which, in the past decade, have totaled more than $5.6 million in grants and contracts. SU also collaborates with the University of Maryland, University College's Technology Management Program.
