A Traditional Catholic University with Global Reach

The College of Liberal Arts and Sciences has been part St. John's University since the school's founding in 1870. St. John's is a private, Catholic university in the Vincentian tradition. The school's main campus is in the Queens borough of New York City, and it has been rated among the Top 10 Universities for Ethnic Diversity by 'U.S. News and World Report.'

'U.S. News' also included St. John's among its Top 200 Research Universities.'The Princeton Review' rated St. John's University as a Best Northeastern College and one of its Best 378 Colleges.

St. John's also maintains campuses in Staten Island, Manhattan, and Rome, Italy, with additional locations in Oakdale on Long Island, and in Paris, France.

Many Concentration Choices for Master of Arts Students

The College of Liberal Arts and Sciences offers 16 Master of Arts (M.A.) degree plans. These include English, Spanish, sociology, and history.

Several of the M.A. degree programs offer multiple concentration options. The M.A. in Liberal Studies degree program gives students a choice of concentrations such as humanities, social science, and cultural/women's studies. Theology master's degree students may concentrate their coursework on pastoral theology, biblical studies, or historical and theological studies.

The government and politics M.A. degree plan gives students 5 concentration options, including international relations and American government. Qualified government and politics students who also seek law degrees have the option to pursue a St. John's dual M.A./J.D. degree program.

An Array of Master of Science Degree Options

The SCJ at St. John's features 5 Master of Science degree programs, with single or multiple tracks, depending upon the field of study. Students may work toward the M.S. degree in chemistry, biology, and biological and pharmaceutical technology. The M.S. in school psychology degree program offers a choice of bilingual or general academic tracks.

St. John's library and information science master's degree program offers 10 concentrations from which students may choose, including children's/young adult services, school librarianship, digital libraries, and archives and preservation.

Liberal Arts and Sciences Doctoral Programs and Specialized Tracks

St. John's University offers 6 doctoral degree programs in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences. These include the Doctor of Arts in English degree program, the D.A. in Modern World History degree program, the Doctor of Philosophy in Biology degree program, and the Doctor of Audiology (Au.D.) degree program. Clinical psychology students may follow either the general or childhood track to Ph.D. degrees, and the school psychology degree program offers general and bilingual paths to the Doctor of Psychology degree.

Graduate Certificates for Post-Baccalaureate and Post-Master Students

Students who have earned their bachelor's degrees may undertake Advanced Certificate programs in public administration in government, Latin American and Caribbean studies, and Asian and African cultural studies. Master's degree holders are eligible to pursue Advanced Certificates in library and information science as well as in East Asian and cultural studies.

Online and International-Study Options

Most of the graduate degree programs offered in the SCJ are based on the main campus in Queens, with some programs offering classes in Manhattan and Oakdale. Students pursuing the Advanced Certificate in Library and Information Science and the Master of Library Science in Law Librarianship may complete their programs online.

Degree programs at the school's campus in Rome are open to students working toward the Master of Arts in Government and Politics degree, the Master of Arts in Museum Administration degree, and the Advanced Certificate in International Law and Diplomacy. The museum administration M.A. degree program also offers study abroad options in Rome and Paris.

Multiple Options for Graduate Scholarships, Assistantships, and Fellowships

St. John's offers graduate students more than a half dozen scholarship options, including endowed scholarships for post-baccalaureate students in Asian studies, speech pathology, and history. The College of Liberal Arts and Sciences also offers a number of merit-based graduate assistantship and university fellowship positions each year that carry research and teaching responsibilities.

The University encourages its students to apply for Fulbright Student Grants as well, which give recipients opportunities to teach and conduct research abroad. In 2013, St. John's University set a record for the most students to receive Fulbright grants in 1 year, with 10 students winning the merit-based award.

A Campus with a Culture of Service and Sports

Daily service opportunities bring students, staff members, and faculty members together to help the wider community. Service options for interested students include volunteer work with local nursing homes and shelters, as well as soup kitchens and meal-delivery programs.

St. John's also has a strong tradition of sports, with its 17 men's and women's Red Storm teams playing in the NCAA's Division 1 Big East Conference. The school's basketball team, ranked 7th for all-time NCAA wins, plays other Big East schools at Madison Square Garden.
