A Top College of Engineering

The "U.S. News and World Report" gives the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth a ranking as a top-tier regional university in the Northeast and lists the College of Engineering among the top 50 undergraduate programs in the country. The College’s 65 full-time professors bring in millions of dollars annually in grants from private agencies and national agencies to support groundbreaking research in many traditional and emerging fields, including marine technologies, advanced materials, energy systems, intelligent systems, wireless networks and communications, computational physics, sustainability engineering, high-performance computing, biomedical/healthcare engineering, and biomimetic and composite materials.

Full-Spectrum Graduate Offerings

The College of Engineering consists of six departments: Bioengineering; Civil and Environmental Engineering; Computer and Information Science; Electrical and Computer Engineering; Mechanical Engineering; and Physics. The college offers a range of Master of Science (MS) degrees from these departments and PhD degree programs in Electrical and Computer Engineering and Engineering and Applied Sciences. The college participates in the interdisciplinary biomedical engineering and biotechnology PhD program. The College of Engineering also awards several certificate programs.

Graduate Programs in Electrical and Computer Engineering

The Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at UMass Dartmouth offers a PhD, an MS, and a 15-credit graduate certificate program. Programs may be completed on a full-time or part-time basis. Courses are structured to accommodate the schedules of working professionals.

Research foci include signals and systems; applied electromagnetics; applied acoustics; electronics and solid-state devices; database systems; embedded systems; artificial intelligence, database systems, and Internet computing; multimedia communication; biomedical computing; and reliability, security, and fault tolerance.

PhD in Biomedical Engineering and Biotechnology

UMass Dartmouth grants an interdisciplinary, nationally-recognized PhD in Biomedical Engineering and Biotechnology that combines engineering, technology, and biology. The program focuses on research in bioengineering, biomaterials, and microbe, animal, and plant biotechnology. The program is a partnership of the Departments of Mathematics, Chemistry and Biochemistry, Biotechnology, Biology, Mechanical Engineering, Civil and Environmental Engineering.

PhD in Engineering and Applied Sciences

The program offers four interdisciplinary options - Applied Mechanics and Materials, Computational Science and Engineering, Computer Science and Information Systems, and Industrial and Systems Engineering. Crosscutting options provide students with the means to integrate and synthesize disciplinary depth with breadth of interests, visions, and skills for successful interdisciplinary research careers in industry and academia.

MS in Mechanical Engineering

The Department of Mechanical Engineering, offers a master's program with three tracks: a coursework option, a thesis option, or a project option. Courses are scheduled during the late afternoon and early evening to accommodate working professionals. State-of-the-art laboratories support research in energy systems, fluid structure interaction, advanced materials, cell/tissue preservation, complex flows, micro mechanics, industrial design and automation, and other areas. Industrial and Systems Engineering is and option within the program.

MS in Civil and Environmental Engineering

The Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering offers a master's program that works closely with local government agencies, small businesses, and industries to conduct research on and overcome the challenges associated with nation's infrastructure. Areas of specialization include water resources, geotechnical engineering, transportation engineering, environmental engineering, structural engineering and applied mechanics.

MS in Computer Science

The MS in Computer Science program focuses on coursework in theory, applications, systems, and software development. The program also helps students develop their skills through realistic scale projects within the courses. Areas of specialization range from network engineering and science to security to intelligent agents to e-commerce.

MS in Physics

The MS in Physics program is ranked as one of the top physics MS programs in the country by the American Institute of Physics. The Physics Department offers coursework in a broad range of topics, including computational physics, mathematical physics, quantum mechanics, relativity, astrophysics, electrodynamics, fluid physics, and nuclear physics.

The program prepares both part-time and full-time students for careers in teaching, research, or industrial research and development. Graduate students choose from three tracks: MS with thesis; MS with research project; and MS with comprehensive examination.
