The Henry C. Lee School of Criminal Justice and Forensic Sciences
The Henry C. Lee School of Criminal Justice and Forensic Sciences at the University of New Haven is named for the world-renowned forensic scientist who has consulted on more than 8,000 cases worldwide, including the O.J. Simpson trial and the Jon Benet Ramsey investigation. Dr. Lee, who previously served as chief criminalist for the State of Connecticut and director of the Connecticut State Police Forensic Science Laboratory, joined the University of New Haven forensic sciences program in 1975 and helped build it into one of the foremost forensic academic programs in the world.
The Henry C. Lee School at the University of New Haven offers graduate degree programs in Forensic Science and Forensic Technology. The programs are designed for students continuing beyond their undergraduate work or working professionals in criminal justice-related fields seeking additional focus and training in a scientific or technical sub-specialty.
The University of New Haven campus is also home to the Henry C. Lee Institute of Forensic Science, which conducts advanced forensic research and trains law enforcement professionals from around the globe. Through the Lee College and the Lee Institute, University of New Haven students have the opportunity to interact with Lee and other distinguished forensic scientists and law enforcement professionals.
MS in Forensic Science
The MS in Forensic Science degree program at the University of New Haven is one of the foremost forensic science programs in the nation, focusing on up-to-date analytical and scientific methods and a broad understanding of the concepts of the forensic sciences as applied to physical evidence in law and criminal investigations. Accredited by the Forensic Science Education Programs Accreditation Commission (FEPAC), the 42-credit, four-semester program offers flexible class times and course delivery options for working professionals.
Students complete a sequence of coursework and a series of electives. Core courses include Survey of Forensic Science; Forensic Expert Testimony; Advanced Criminalistics; Physical Analysis in Forensic Science; Forensic DNA Analysis; and Thesis I and II. Among the electives are Capillary Electrophoresis; Advanced Crime Scene Investigation; Wildlife Forensics; Drug Chemistry and Identification; Forensic Anthropology; and Forensic Toxicology.
Through immersive, concentrated study in the laboratory, students gain hands-on experience immediately applicable to their chosen careers. Students learn from expert faculty with professional experience in key positions such as lab directors and crime scene bench analysts.
Graduates of the University of New Haven MS in Forensic Science program have gone on to pursue careers with organizations and agencies that include FBI Lab Division; Bristol-Myers Squibb; California Los Angeles Crime Lab; New York City Police Department; U.S. Dept. of Agriculture Bioforensics Unit; NCIS; and American Regulation of Pathology Armed Forces DNA Lab.
MS in Forensic Technology
The MS in Forensic Technology program at the University of New Haven is the first graduate-level forensic science curriculum of its kind in the nation. It combines traditional crime scene techniques with advanced instrumentation and measurements. The program is designed for students continuing from their undergraduate work or working professionals. Students can complete all required courses during evening hours, Monday through Friday.
Students in the program master various forms of field technology including ground penetrating radar, laser scanners, portable instruments, and biometric devices. In addition, the students benefit from the strong connections that the University of New Haven has forged with local and state police as well as the state medical examiner.
Students complete 42 credits of coursework, capstone or internship project, and restricted electives that allow them to develop specialized knowledge in areas such as bloodstain pattern analysis, firearms evidence, and forensic anthropology. Core courses include Advanced Crime Scene Investigation; Crime Scene Reconstruction; Forensic Field Technology; Medicolegal Investigation and Identification; Law and Evidence; and Criminal Procedure; and Forensic Photography.
Accomplished Forensics Faculty
In addition to the distinguished Dr. Henry C. Lee, other notable forensic science faculty at University of New Haven include Dr. Clare R. Glynn, whose research interests are forensic biology focused on body fluid identification, DNA degradation, and RNA analysis; Dr. Brooke Weinger Kammrath, whose research interests comprise the identification and characterization of microscopic samples of forensic interest, the statistical analysis of trace, pattern and impression evidence, and investigations into the significance of physical evidence; and Dr. Alyssa Marsico, an expert in mass spectrometry and its use for the forensic analysis of both trace and biological evidence.
